The world’s biggest sailing ship is currently on its way to Iceland, according to Russian news website, Ria Novosti. The ship is called Sedov and is a three-masted barque. Read the full story

As Denmark prepares to send a second warship to the Gulf of Aden to help patrol the pirate-infested waters off the Somali coast, it has sealed an important deal with Kenya to process any pirates the Danes catch in the area. The new bilateral agreement will greatly ease the lingering issue of what to do with the pirates after they are apprehended by Danish patrol boats. Read the full story

The Swedish Armed Forces have confirmed that a Swedish naval patrol in the Gulf of Aden arrested seven pirates caught operating the region. Crewmembers from the HMS Malmo apprehended the Somali pirates as they tried to board a Greek cargo ship outside of Yemen. Read the full story

With the likelihood of ice-free seas around the Arctic fast becoming a reality, the Danish Defence Commission is calling for greater Nordic military presence in Greenland. Any military action taken by Denmark will affect Greenland because defence is not one of the areas Greenland will assume responsibility for in June 2009 when it makes the transition to Self Rule. Norway is the latest nation to join the European Union’s anti-piracy operation known as Atalanta off the coast of Somalia. Although Norway is not a member of the EU, the Nordic nation will be sending a Nansen Class frigate ship to the Gulf of Aden this summer to help battle the piracy plague that has been hampering shipping in the region.
