Two members of the Icelandic Left Green Movement have today resigned from the parliamentary party. Both say they will remain in the Athingi parliament as independents and both will remain personal members of the Left Green Movement. The government still enjoys a slim majority. Read the full story

MPs from the smallest party in Iceland’s parliament say that they are against any future neutral mediator in the Icesave issue coming from a Scandinavian country. They told media that they cannot support an intermediary who comes from a country which has put so much political pressure on Iceland to obey the wishes of the Netherlands and the UK. The parliamentary group of Iceland’s Left Green Movement will meet this afternoon upon their leader, Steingrimur J. Sigfusson’s return home from the IMF annual meeting in Turkey. The meeting is being described by some as a last gasp attempt to breathe life back into the party’s coalition government with the Social Democrats. Read the full story

Change at the helm of Iceland’s Ministry for Health took place at Bessasstadir, the Presidential residence, yesterday. Alfheidur Ingadottir is now Minister for Health and said that the budget cuts to the health service are very difficult, but that everybody will work to keep the level of healthcare high. Ogmundur Jonasson, Iceland’s Minister for Health resigned his position earlier today in a meeting with Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir. He says he cannot put his weight behind the Icesave deal as the government is requiring its ministers to do. He does not, however, wish for his actions to destroy the coalition. Read the full story

Iceland’s Social Democrats and Left Green Movement began talks yesterday on the formation of a new government following both parties’ strong showing in Saturday’s elections.
Together the parties hold 34 seats in the 63-seat Althingi parliament, meaning a comfortable majority. Despite this, the Independence Party are actually the second largest party in parliament with 16 MPs – two more than the Left Greens. Read the full story
