For information on the May 2011 eruption at Grimsvotn, please check the IceNews homepage for regular updates) Volcanic activity at South Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano and the production of ash have been steady over the last few days and the lava stream continues to flow to the north. Geologists and meteorologists say that although activity is much lower now than at the peak, there is no sign the eruption is coming to an end. Read the full story

Icelandair has decided to move its hub from Glasgow back to Keflavik International Airport from midday and will also stop routing its Icelandic flights through Akureyri at that time. At least three flights from Glasgow are expected to land at Keflavik this afternoon. Read the full story

An Israeli passenger plane on its way from Tel Aviv to New York landed in Keflavik airport yesterday afternoon. There was a burning smell in the cabin of the Boeing 747 aircraft. The pilot decided to land at Keflavik airport around 15:30 (3:30pm) yesterday local time. According to MBL, there were about 400 passengers on board but there were no injuries reported. A 13 year old girl was sleepwalking the other night. She left her home and took keys for a jeep from an area in Iceland called Husafell and drove the jeep all the way to Keflavik, all during her sleepwalk. The girl is uninjured and the truck was not damaged, according t0 Morgunbladid. Read the full story

For the first time ever, direct flights between Iceland’s international airport Keflavik and Seattle-Tacoma in the United States began yesterday by Iceland’s national flag carrier airline, Icelandair. The flight lasted about 7 to 8 hours in a Boeing 757-200 (TF-FIA). When the aircraft was departing to Seattle from Keflavik, the inbound flights from Mainland Europe flew around in a circle over Reykjavik and the capital area before touching down in Keflavik. The old DC-3, otherwise known as Pall Sveinsson, also joined them. Read the full story

Keflavik, Iceland: At 14:44 local and GMT time (2:44pm) at Iceland’s largest international airport and gateway airport to the country, Keflavik, a United Airlines Boeing 767-300 made an emergency landing. The United Airlines Flight Number 949 flying en route London Heathrow to Chicago O’hare (ORD) when the flight crew and pilots witnessed smoke coming from the cockpit. As per standard procedures, the pilots declared an emergency and diverted to the closest airfield from the present location which was Keflavik, Iceland. Read the full story
