Negotiations are underway between the Icelandic state and Hawkpoint Consultants over the possibility of employing the international company as negotiator between the ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Icelandic banks under the leadership of government representatives, mbl.is reports. No agreement has yet been reached with the company, but the Minister of Finance hopes one will be reached soon. The issue was brought up in parliament Tuesday morning. Read the full story

Contrary to recent news, Icelandic Prime Minister in waiting, Johanna Sigurdardottir said today at the Althingi parliament building in Reykjavik that the new government will probably be revealed tomorrow.
Leader of the Left Green Movement, Steingrimur J. Sigfusson says that the coalition’s talks with the Progressive Party have not hit a brick wall by any means; although he does concede that there will be a lot of fine tuning to do to get the government working efficiently. Read the full story

The Icelandic krona began its “managed refloat” on Friday – and celebrated on Monday with a spectacular belly flop, gasping for air and struggling not to drown. It is only fair to point out, however, that yesterday saw a marked levelling-out, with only slight changes in both directions.
Meanwhile, also on Monday, a thousand people celebrated the 90th anniversary of Icelandic nationhood by demonstrating against the incumbent government and central bank board on the beautiful Arnarholl hill, right outside the Central Bank of Iceland. Iceland gained total home rule 90 years ago, but only gained total independence from Denmark in 1944.
After the rally, nearly a hundred of the protesters went into the central bank itself to have a little chat with governor David Oddsson; but riot police happened to be manning reception at the time. Read the full story

According to a newly published opinion poll carried out for Frettabladid, Around 60 percent of Icelanders are now in favour of European Union membership for the country. That is approximately nine percent less than in a similar poll in October. Fewer Independence Party voters now hope for Icelandic EU membership, with their numbers dropping some ten percent in a month. Read the full story
