It’s 2010 and much has changed since this time last year. Despite a good past year for many individuals, the collective experience of the Nordic people has been fairly low on the list of all-time highlights.

The global recession was the main headline in the region, with bailouts for banks and factories closing down. Iceland got a new government, which proceeded to make little progress, by some people’s estimation.

Icesave dragged on and on and the Copenhagen climate talks were something of a debacle; a fact we could all be ruing together as we burn and die, according to some doomsayers. Even generous assessments were little more than whispers, however.

On the other hand, it looks like the world economy is turning the corner and the USA now has a president willing to take climate change seriously and willing to give peace a chance…despite the increasing troop numbers in Afghanistan.

Despite everything, IceNews had a particularly good 2009.

Following the massive influx of readers at the time of the Icelandic banking collapse in October 2008, the number of visitors to the site has remained well above previous levels day after day. And that is down to you. So thank you very much!

There is a lot of optimism for 2010 and a lot of interesting projects and movements underway; and whatever comes to pass in Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden – we’ll be there to tell you all about it.

The IceNews team wishes you a happy, prosperous, and above all, peaceful 2010.
