Golf legend Sorenstam’s career ends with a whimper

annika-sorenstamIn an unfortunate end to one of golf’s most legendary women golfers, Sweden’s superstar Annika Sorenstam missed the cut for her final LGPA American tournament in Florida, bringing the curtain down on her 15-year career in rather anticlimactic fashion. She had hoped to last a little longer in the season-ending USLPGA ADT Championship, but didn’t make it past the second round.
Sorenstam told the crowd she had received more joy from her legendary career than she had ever imagined possible. The Local newspaper reported that Sorenstam shot a three-over 75 to finish in 18th place. “It’s almost that a tear wants to come out, but it’s not really coming out,” she said. “I think it’s because I’m very Read the full story

Golf legend Sorenstam’s Swedish finale spoiled by Amy Yang

mf_8004In her final golfing tournament on home soil, Annika Sorenstam didn’t get the storybook ending to an illustrious career that she had hoped for, according to Yahoo.com. Amy Yang was the spoiler, tying the course record for the Scandinavian TPC and winning her first professional tournament by six shots.

Sorenstam, who is 37 years old, will be retiring from professional golf in December. She made a decent start to the final round of the Scandinavian TPC, moving into second place with an eagle on the 17th hole. But after slicing her tee shot into the water on the 18th, she had to settle for a disappointing tie for sixth place with three other Swedish players.

The South Korean Yang, who is only 19 years old, birdied 7 of 10 holes in the final round to take the top position on the leader board. This was Yang’s first win as a professional golfer, and by tying the course record here it would suggest that she has a promising career ahead of her.

Sorenstam was still the centre of attention in many ways however; as this was the last tournament she will play in Sweden before retiring. The Hall-of-Famer has won 10 majors and 72 LPGA titles, making her arguably the best woman to ever play professional golf. She is retiring to get married and focus on other interests.

Norwegian women golfers making history

Golf is still something of a novelty in Norway, but two women from the Nordic nation are proving that progress is being made. Suzann Pettersen has been Norway’s Queen of the Links for many years, and she showed the world why this week by easily winning the Irish Open in Dublin.

Pettersen’s victory may not have come as much of a surprise given her golfing experience and talent. But what really caught the local headlines was the Norwegian player who came second.

Marianne Skarpnord is not even part of the LPGA tour, but at 22 she is already showing signs of her budding skill. Hailing from Sarpsborg near the southern border with Sweden, Skarpnord put the pressure on Pettersen throughout the Irish Open.

Pettersen, currently ranked third in the world, came out on top at the Portmarnock Links with a 5-under-par finish. Skarpnord’s under-par score was a career best, and places her squarely on the path to LPGA qualification later this year.

“I’ll travel over this autumn and try to qualify,” Skarpnord told reporters at the event. “If I manage, that’s great. If not, I’ll gain from the experience and keep playing in Europe.”

Finnish golfer finishes third in Ladies’ US Open

minea blomqvistMinea Blomqvist made her mark as an up and coming Scandinavian golfer on the women’s circuit, finishing third at the Interlachen course in Minnesota this weekend.

Now based in Florida, the 23-year old’s game has improved dramatically, with a little inspiration from her boyfriend, Roope Kakko, another Pro Tour golfer who shot a 4-under-par 67 in Friday’s second round of the Scottish Challenge.

“My boyfriend is on the Challenge Tour in Europe, and he was 4 under today,” she said. “I wanted to equal that today.”

And she did, carding a 4-under 69, at times a shot off the lead with added pressure of a major tournament. She shot 72 the previous day in the storm-delayed tournament.

Turning professional in 2004, Blomqvist can now claim to be Finland’s most successful golfer having won a European event in Hungary. Although she failed to qualify for the LPGA Tour, a 34th finish in the 2005 qualifying tournament gained her playing rights.

Previously, 13th was her best in tour events but since moving to Florida she has managed a fifth-place tie in the Fields Open, the LPGA’s second full-field event. Two tournaments later, she had a third, and then a tie for eighth in her seventh event.
