Ossur Skarphedinsson, Minister of Foreign Affairs in Iceland, handed over the membership application for the Republic of Iceland to join the European Union today at a meeting at 10:45am Swedish time. They had a formal party and small celebration in Sweden this morning during the handing over and submission of the EU application. Read the full story

According to German news source Süddeutsche Zeitung, the Christian Social Union of Bavaria party which is the sister party of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Germany is not satisfied and against the Icelandic application for European Union membership. Markus Ferber, leader of the CSU, says that the European Union cannot rescure and pull Iceland out of the economic crisis. Read the full story
