The refugee support group Asylret has come forward and told Danish police that 44 of the Iraqi asylum seekers who were staying in Denmark have disappeared. The Emerald Princess cruiseship, which docked at Copenhagen recently, was carrying at least 14 known patients who have contracted the H1N1 flu virus. The Politiken newspaper reports that 13 of the patients are crewmembers, while only one flu victim is a passenger. Read the full story

After lengthy squabbles with local officials, the daughter of Denmark’s wealthiest man was granted permission to open the nation’s largest public hunting ground. Lego heiress Sofie Kirk Kristiansen will create a 1,400-hectare public forest in the middle of Jutland where hunters will be welcome to stalk their prey. But many groups are still voicing their anger over the decision.

Tommy Maro, the Culture Minister of Greenland, has proposed a bill to parliament outlining a new policy for the use of language in Greenland. The goal of the new legislation is to facilitate broader language skills in the country, according to the newspaper Sermitsiaq. Read the full story

The Danish naval ship, HMS Absalon, is facing an unusual dilemma with the five Somali pirates it pulled out of the Gulf of Aden on 2 January. The pirates’ ship was reportedly sunk by the very cargo vessel they were trying to attack when an emergency flare landed on the pirates’ boat and sank it. Read the full story

The Danish government is considering investing 90 billion kroner in public transport over the next decade, with a particular focus on high-speed trains. The goal is to get up to 20 percent of car drivers off the roads and into some form of public transport, ideally trains, according to an unreleased government report obtained by Berlingske Tidende newspaper.
