The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has been formally requested by Norway to intervene in settling dispute consultations with the EU regarding their ban on the trading of seal products, which Norway claims contravene rules laid down by the WTO itself. Read the full story

The Canadian energy company Magma Energy is said to be near completing a deal that would land it half ownership of Iceland’s HS Orka. If the deal goes ahead, it would be the first time a foreign company has owned such a large share of any Icelandic energy company. The Left Green Party representative on the board of state-owned Reykjavik Energy does not want the company to sell Magma the share – describing the move as a momentous step towards the privatisation of the energy sector. Magma Energy Corporation from Canada has announced that they will invest in the companies of Geysir Green Energy and HS Orka in Iceland, which are partners with Asbru’s clean energy development. The European Union has placed a “seal ban” which prohibits the import of seal products into the EU market. This greatly affects nations that have high Inuit populations which often rely on the seal trade. The Inuit nations call this act by the EU unjustified and cynical, according to SivuNews. The European Parliament has passed a measure banning the import of all products made from seals into its 27 member countries. Special exceptions are allowed for products exported from traditional Inuit hunters in Greenland and Canada. Read the full story

Sweden’s national men’s ice hockey team fought back from a goal down to defeat the United States 4-2 in the consolation round of the World Ice Hockey Championships in Berne. The victory gave the Swedes the bronze medal in the event, placing them in third. Read the full story

Last year the European Commission proposed banning imports of pelts and other products from seals that were killed in an inhumane manner. A seabed mapping expedition in the Arctic region has returned evidence that suggests Denmark has a strong claim to the North Pole thanks to its continued sovereignty over Greenland, whose Home Rule does not entirely remove it from the Danish kingdom. At present, no nation has sovereign rights over the North Pole, even though many covet the idea now that the Arctic appears to be warming up. Read the full story
