In an interview with VíkurFréttir, Rex explained that he had always wanted to visit Iceland, and when he learnt about Atlantic Studios and the possibility of filming a music video in the country, there was no question.

Elizabeth Thoroddsen, Head of Film at Pipar/TBWA, the company in charge of production on the day said, “There is a lot of interest surrounding Iceland. Many find it an interesting place to come and work, and there are plenty of artists/musicians who would like to come and shoot videos here.”

CEO of Pipar/TBWA, Valgeir Magnússon, explained that the location and facilities were perfect for the task at hand and all scenes were recorded without any problems.

The film studio is located in a former aircraft hanger at the old military navel base in Keflavík. The facilities include a 2,200 m2 soundstage with an extra 2,800 m2 for support areas, a 480 seat theatre for screenings and a swimming pool for ocean scenes.

In the last few years, several films have been partly shot at Atlantic Studios including The Good Heart, The Reykjavík Whale Watching Massacre and Rokland. Additionally, large international productions such as Flags Of Our Father and Batman Begins have filmed on location in Iceland.

Asbru Enterprise Park is on the forefront of entrepreneurship, business and academic development in Iceland, with focus on technology, renewable energy, medical tourism and engineering. The Keilir: Atlantic Center of Excellence, located within the park, offers dedicated educational programs and flight training, whilst Iceland’s first data centre and other ventures such as medical tourism are also innovating in their field.

The enterprise park is located on the former NATO defence area in Keflavik, Iceland. When the U.S. Military left the area, Kadeco, Keflavik Airport Development Company, was established with the task of converting the base and its facilities into area for civilian use.

Since, the development company specialised in real-estate development, competitiveness and entrepreneurial development, has led the transformation of the ex-military navel base into the Asbru Enterprise Park.

A medical tourism hospital specialising in weight loss surgery, joint replacements and other medical developments opened just last year. The hospital houses around 35 beds, three operating theatres and all together has the capability of treating up to 4,000 patients per year.

In addition, Asbru offers business offices of varying size, ranging between 15-60 square metres with the option of divided or combined open spaces. Companies have access to fully equipped 40 square metre meeting rooms and two smaller meeting rooms as well as a 100 square metre kitchen facilities.

Amongst some of the companies located in Asbru offices are innovative and ancillary businesses such as engineering firms and agencies. This creates a great working environment where businesses can receive help from other services within the same walls.

Furthermore, Asbru Enterprise Park’s location is an extra advantage as Keflavik International Airport, which has direct flights to major cities such as London, Copenhagen and New York, is just a 5 minute drive away.

Icelandic development company, Kadeco has been offering real estate investors the opportunity to help push medical tourism advancements at the Asbru Enterprise Park, next to Keflavik International Airport, Iceland.

Since the rise in cosmetic and medical tourism over the past few years, the Asbru Enterprise Park has been driving itself as the international centre for health and relaxation. The park, which was formerly the NATO base in Iceland, holds select properties available for purchase at reasonable prices, including the sale of properties in full operation, such as the Icelandic Health Hotel (www.detox.is).

The Icelandic Health Hotel specialises in health and wellness programs, where people stay for two weeks and eliminating alcohol, drugs, caffeine and also learn how to generally lead a healthy lifestyle.

Properties for sale cater for companies looking for service, industry and residential development locations. A few examples of the properties on offer can been seen below:

There are already tremendous opportunities tied to the development of health and medical tourism in the Reykjanes area. Keflavik International Airport is located near the park, allowing for easier travel, as well as the Blue Lagoon, a prominent tourist hotspot, which is only 15 minutes away.

The Reykjanes Health Association has recently been founded based on the opportunities that reside in Reykjanes in the field of health. The goals of the newly founded association are to market Iceland as the number one destination for health and medical tourism. A medical tourism clinic is being built at Asbru and it will open its doors during the fall of 2011. Health related tourist services will lead to increased diversity in the Reykjanes economy, create new jobs and increase foreign currency income.

The Enterprise Park prides itself in offering a varied selection of entrepreneurship, education and business facilities, including academic programs, aviation training, fitness development, medical tourism projects and international data centres.

The Keilir, Atlantic Center of Excellence, also located within the Enterprise Park, consists of four different schools: the Health Academy, School of Energy and Technology and the Aviation Academy. Each school has the same objective in preparing students for further studies at university, whilst providing excellent specialist training.

In 2006, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) abandoned its military base in Keflavik, leaving over 900 local people unemployed. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of the departure, the local population looked at the opportunities and consequently established the Asbru Enterprise Park.
The conference, organised by the Keilir Aviation Academy, is set to address the issues faced from the Eyjafjallajokull volcanic eruption and its effects on aviation.

The Atlantic Conference on Eyjafjallajokull and Aviation, to be held at the Andrews theatre, an ex-U.S. army movie theatre, will cover topics such as: What happened at Eyjafjallajokull? Why was Europe’s airspace closed? What procedures were followed? What has been learnt? What are the effects of volcanic ash on airplanes and can they be reduced? What steps are to be taken, and by whom, to minimise the threats that volcanic ash poses to aviation?

Patron of the Conference will be H.E. Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, President of Iceland and Guest of Honour and Invited Speaker will be Capt. Eric Moody, the captain who glided the famous British Airways Flight 9 B747 out of volcanic ash to safety on 24 June 1982.

The Asbru Enterprise Park, located in Keflavik, is synonymous for aviation and technology across Iceland after NATO evacuated its airbase in 2006. The former airbase was then re-invented into a community of entrepreneurs and businesses. The business park is within touching distance from Iceland’s international flight gateway, Keflavik airport, and is roughly a fifty-minute drive from Reykjavik. The Keilir Aviation Academy finds its home within the park, offering high standards of flight education. Asbru also holds other exciting projects such as a green energy research center and Iceland’s first international data centre.

Iceland is set to become the next hot location for data center services and green energy sources; the Asbru Enterprise Park in Keflavik will lead the way for companies across the globe.

The partnering group of wholesale data developer Verne Global, Verne Holdings, has signed a contract with the Wellcome Trust to help the completion of a 44-acre data center campus at the Asbru Enterprise Park in Iceland. With Iceland’s favourable natural attributes and renewable energy resources, Verne Global could save customers as much as USD 100 million in ten years on energy costs alone.

“What makes Verne Global unique is that it is able to offer its customers a cost effective, yet truly green solution to their data center needs by providing the benefits of Iceland’s 100 percent free cooling, renewable energy resources and predictable forecasting of energy pricing,” explained Jeff Monroe, CEO of Verne Global. “Together, Verne Global and the Wellcome Trust are creating a powerful solution that enables data center users the opportunity to go green without paying a price premium.”

A new Icelandic project titled Greenqloud is also in the pipelines, the idea behind Greenqloud is to rent space in data centers located in Iceland and sell cloud computing services to web companies and individuals across the world. However, what makes this project unique is that it embraces the use of clean power and manages company carbon footprint levels. The cloud computing services include virtual server hosting, data storage, scientific data processing and software as a service infrastructure.

Greenqloud is also in discussions with Verne Global, amongst various data center operators in Iceland, about data center construction. Eirikur Hrafnsson, CEO of Greenqloud, says that there has been a recent “gold rush” as a result of the devaluation of the Icelandic Krona, the IT history of the country and the emission-free power grid.

Greenqloud plans to launch its beta service by the fourth quarter of this year on a small scale. After that, Greenqloud wants to launch on a much larger, public scale in 2011.

Other high-profile international customers are also using Iceland’s growing data centers; Web browser developer Opera Software has been announced as the first customer of the Thor Data Center in Hafnarfjordur.

“The reason Opera Software came to sign an agreement with Thor Data Center is that the company can offer us energy from 100 percent renewable sources,” said Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, founder of Opera Software.

The hospital facility at the Asbru Enterprise Park, situated near Keflavik International Airport, will specialise in weight loss surgery, bariatric surgery and gastric bypass surgery. The facility will house around 35 hospital beds, three operating theatres and all together have the capability of treating up to 4,000 patients per year.

The location for the hospital was chosen mainly due to the area’s already strong background with tourists, tourism and its close proximity to Iceland’s international airport. It is believed that up to 300 new jobs will be created by the development of the facility and its related services.

Asbru Enterprise Park is also helping to push Iceland to the forefront of education, business development and entrepreneurship. The enterprise park offers aviation training, Iceland’s first international data centre, geothermal research and academic programs at Keilir: Atlantic Center of Excellence.

The Asbru Enterprise Park came together after the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) abandoned its military base in 2006, leaving over 900 local people unemployed. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of the departure, the local population looked at the opportunities and consequently established the park.

The Asbru Enterprise Park, located in Keflavik, is pushing Iceland to the forefront of entrepreneurship, education and business development. The park offers enthusiastic academic programs at Keilir: Atlantic Center of Excellence, aviation training, Iceland’s first international data centre and other inspiring projects such as medical tourism.

In 2006, the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) abandoned its military base in Keflavik, leaving over 900 local people unemployed. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of the departure, the local population looked at the opportunities and consequently established the enterprise park, Asbru. The park’s main areas of interest are to focus on technology, engineering and renewable energy, in order to create new jobs in Iceland, as well as education facilities.

The Keilir: Atlantic Center of Excellence, located within the park, consists of four different schools: the Health Academy, School of Energy and Technology and the Aviation Academy. Each school has the same objective in preparing students for further studies at university, whilst providing excellent specialist training.

Asbru Enterprise Park is also set to host an innovative venture by Kadeco, combining medical advancements with medical tourism. The hospital specialising in fat-removal, joint replacements and other medical treatments will house around 35 hospital beds, three operating theatres and all together have the capability of treating up to 4,000 patients per year.

Housing facilities within the park will also be utilised to accommodate patients and their families. The location for the hospital facility was chosen largely due to the area’s vast knowledge and experience of tourism. It is also believed that up to 300 new jobs will be created by the redevelopment of the hospital and its related services.
