Early Wednesday morning the Icelandic embassy in Copenhagen was attacked. A security camera was disabled with spray paint, the Icelandic coat of arms was defaced in the same way, green paint was splashed on the front of the house and on the front door, in large letters: “Green energy – pure lies” and “Nature Killers” was sprayed, among other things. Today people from around Reykjavik will gather to clean rubbish around the Vatnsmyri area as part of the largest global day of climate action ever. The event—one of more than 4,600 rallies in more than 170 nations—is coordinated by 350.org to urge world leaders to take fast and effective action on global warming. This is the first global campaign ever organised around a scientific data point: 350 parts per million CO2 is the safe upper limit for the atmosphere according to the latest scientific data. A youth movement of the Independence Party in Iceland has issued a statement today putting them at odds with the senior section of the party. The Independence Party is the senior government coalition partner and is headed by Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde. Omar Ragnarsson, Icelandic documentary filmmaker and former national television journalist, has been named as the winner of the Seacology Environmental Prize 2008 for his campaign to save Iceland’s wild highlands from the recently completed Karahnjukar hydroelectric project.
The prize has been awarded since 1992 to individuals making a great personal contribution to the preservation of landscapes and species in island environments around the world.
Seacology has awarded the prize to activists from Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Hawaii, among others, but this is the first time the prize has been awarded for work in Europe.
Omar Ragnarsson will formally receive the prize at a ceremony in San Francisco on 2 October.
