A new website allowing distance-learning of the Icelandic language has been officially opened by the Vigdis Finnbogadottir Institute of Foreign Languages.
The website is called icelandiconline.is and is open to internet users everywhere.
Vigdis Finnbogadottir, former president of Iceland and the world’s first democratically elected female head of state, opened the new website at the Nordic House in Reykjavik yesterday. The language learning website is aimed more at adults than children and includes a special course for foreigners who are living in an Icelandic-speaking environment.
The website is interactive and teaching takes place in Icelandic. 16,000 people were already registered with the site before its official unveiling and visitors to the new website number over 600 active users per day.

Certainly sounds like it will be a success with that many people registered – excellent!
Anyone have a clue how to register? I’ve never seen a sign in form like it has.
Click on the pen on the right hand column to enter details and click on the green thingy to confirm each detail.
When you have 0 details left to confirm then you know you have finished and just wait.
Mike – Knowless explains it well.
I think this is some sort of black humour on the part of the creators. Sort of a filter saying that if you cannot work through the complex registration system, don’t even consider trying to learn our tough language! :)
So, none of it’s in english right? What if I cannot understand what I’m learning? Have I done something wrong or is it supposed to all be icelandic?
