Icelandic parliament to vote on stopping EU membership bid

Icelandic Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir has indicated that parliament will vote this month on whether or not to stop the country’s European Union accession bid.

MPs Unnur Bra Konradsdottir, Asmundur Einar Dadason, Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson and Birgitta Jonsdottir have submitted a parliamentary resolution to the Althingi parliament to backtrack on Iceland’s EU application.

It was in July last year that parliament voted 33 to 28 in favour of starting accession talks with the bloc, RUV reports.

Johanna Sigurdardottir said yesterday that parliament will likely get the chance to vote on the issue again this month. “Democracy has to run its course; but I hope, of course, that this resolution will be voted down,” she said.

Opponents of Iceland joining the European Union are a loud voice in politics and daily life – and while it is possible that Althingi will vote to stop accession talks, it is considered unlikely. A similar result to last time is forecast at this stage.

Will Iceland’s European Union accession (bid) be subjected to a referendum? If so, it better be soon! Very soon!

People of Iceland! Say NO! Don’t give away your sovereignty!

  2. Bromley86 says:

Of course there would be a referendum, but only once the deal on the table is finalised.

Finally, though, some sense from an Icelandic politician (although I think he’s an ex-politician):

Jon Baldvin also said that the idea put forth by the Independence Party and supported by several Left Greens to retract the EU application was absurd. “This is the best way to destroy the little that is left of Iceland’s reputation”. It is without precedent in international negotiations that people behave with such stupidity.

People of Iceland! Say NO! keep your hands off our money and keep your crooked politicians!

  4. Brjnn says:

Say NO!!!!! We do not want to join the EU!! Listen to the people!

  5. SIR EURO says:

Do a referendum really matters in a country were a politic mafia of a group of friends families do whatever they want??

Iceland might be the only Middle-age state in Europe, ruled by lords of the banks and companies. They control everything and people think this is a democracy because they put a paper in a box every four years.

What he means is the reputation of the Social Democrats.

But they really should have known better than to ram rod application in.

It was only Steingrímur J lust for geting into the government chair for a year or two that did allow it get through.

The double referendum would have avoided this problem for Social Democrats — something that was discussed at length in earlier post here.

The Social Demicrats they are splitting now under the pressures of this coalition back into they three component parts..

Ingibjörg Sólrún who is leader of one those parts and who has the more keen political sense has been voice of reason but the others in Social Democrats they just are floating in cloud balloon far away from the political realities on the ground with actual voters and tax payer here in Iceland.

If Iceland does not join the EU, Iceland is dead.

“Say NO!!!!! We do not want to join the EU!! Listen to the people!”

People listen media; media in Iceland was-is controlled by the mafia: politic mafia of a group of friends families (I.P.).

If Iceland does not join the EU, Iceland will die again: next crisis!

  8. Fisy says:

“>If Iceland does not join the EU, Iceland is dead. ”

We have our problems but they are best solved with full control over our trade policy ( that is not possible in EU customs union ) either as part of the EEA or not.

    EFTA works just fine.

Icelandic voters and tax payer are very clear about they ideas in this regards — only the Social Demicrats that do represent at they height of voting populartity in April 2009 less than 30% of voters of Iceland — are for it.

No, he’s quite specific that it’s about the insane, self-serving points scoring/fear of the EU in the IP & LG.

Negotiate then vote. No one will be upset if, as seems almost certain, Iceland votes to stay out of the EU. But the whole “No” camp in Iceland has been determined that it should never even get to a referendum on a deal.
