Icelandic festivals in North America

Icelandic Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir is currently in North America and will be a guest of honour at two annual Icelandic festivals.

It is the 111th Icelandic festival in Mountain, North Dakota and also the 121st such festival in Gimli, Manitoba.

As Iceland enjoys its annual Verslunarmannahelgi holiday weekend, so, it would seem, do the so-called West-Icelanders whose ancestors emigrated to North America.

The North Dakota festival includes a choir from Iceland and Christina Sunley, author of the critically acclaimed novel The Tricking of Freya.

Meanwhile, the Manitoba festival includes Viking warfare demonstrations and the very Icelandic sport of beach volleyball!
