Icelandic president best paid political figure of 2009

Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, President of Iceland, is the highest earning politician in Iceland, according to figures calculated from last year’s tax returns.

For a short period every year the national tax office makes its newly calculated tax figures for everybody from the previous year available to the public – and there follows a media frenzy to calculate how taxes paid translate into wages earned.

Visir.is reports that the President took ISK 1,591,000 (USD 13,207) per month last year in pay.

Other high earning politicians include Independence Party leader Bjarni Benediktsson on ISK 1,231,000 per month. MP Birgir Armannsson took ISK 1,164,000 per month in pay last year and Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir was on ISK 1,100,000.

Mayor of Reykjavik Jon Gnarr took ISK 1,359,000 per month in 2009, but Visir.is was quick to point out that he did not become a politician until 2010.

The overall “Tax Queen” of Iceland in 2009 was a businesswoman in the Westman Islands who paid ISK 343 million (USD 2.84 million) in taxes for the year. She is in the fishing industry.

    These are the best paid only because we have no EU commissioners here in Iceland because — thank the gods — we are not in the EU.

    That is one reason that Össur Skarphéðinsson is off in his own world of support for the EU.

    Like Johanna he looks forward to the idea of being one of Iceland’s EU commissioner — with those nice fat huge salary and nice expenses account to abuse.

    Thanks again for your propaganda!

    @Paul
    Fisy is right about Össur, that guy is no genious or leader material, the reason why he looks like 100 pounds of s**t in a 50 pound bag is not because he is exploding with wisdom and energy, this is just fat.

    Paul where is the propogranda?

    Last time we did hear what EU commissioners ( one for each EU member state ) do make it was:

    EUR 19,909.89 per MONTH plus expenses. And would you like to tell how much those expenses are on top of that ?

    ( This basic pay is 112.5% of top civil service grade paid to the EU burecrats .)

  6. Axel says:

    At least its clear that the EU eurocrats are being payed far more than they are worth.
