Fire and ambulance crews in Iceland went on strike from 08.00 to 16.00 yesterday to protest at unresolved year-long pay negotiations. No major problems occurred.
Both services remained open for true emergencies, but all auxiliary services were cut in the first of several planned strikes.
Fire fighters manned traffic lights on one busy Reykjavik street holding placards warning people to drive carefully while they were striking. Other signs urged passers-by to sound their horns in support – which many did.
With public support seemingly high and no dire effects caused by the strike, organisers are calling it a success – but their pay demands have still not been met and more strike action is planned.
