Disturbing accident figures from Iceland dam project

Over a hundred people are still unable to work following accidents during the construction of the Karahnjukar hydro power plant constructed to power a new aluminium smelter in East Iceland.

Overall some 1,700 people were injured in work accidents during the dam construction process between 2002 and 2009 – 86 percent of whom were working for the contractors Impregilo.

According to RUV, a fifth of those injured were in the youngest group of workers, but 37 percent were aged 30-39. 27 percent were 40-49 years-old.

Ten of the injured are now permanently disabled, 122 broke bones, 49 were poisoned and 35 burnt. Four lost their lives.
