Iceland parliament in marathon debate session

alþingi1Yesterday’s meeting of the Icelandic parliament lasted all night and finally broke at 06.00 this morning. Todays’ meeting started at 11.00

Althingi is running mammoth sessions in order to clear its agenda before breaking up for the summer recess.

Among the issues under discussion was debt relief options for householders and the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative, the press freedom bill championed by Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. The bill was passed.

Today’s itinerary includes Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir’s bill on reducing the number of government ministries, Visir.is reports.

The leaders of Iceland’s main political parties have agreed to attend to all matters of parliament before the 24th June.
