There has been a massive decrease in discard rates for cod and haddock in the Icelandic fishing industry in the years since measurement began in 2001. According to new Marine Research Institute figures, the discard rate is now 0.5 percent, down from 1.5 percent two years ago.
The change is even more stark when looking specifically at haddock: 5 percent waste in 2005 and just 0.7 percent last year.
Eythor Bjornsson from the Directorate of Fisheries told RUV that a part of the explanation is that small fish are now fetching a good price on the market – but there are also other reasons.
He added that the problem is not yet solved, despite some good results. The figures also only count dead fish thrown away over a certain predetermined size.
