Seamen’s Day celebrated in Iceland

orskurThe Festival of the Sea has taken over Reykjavik all this weekend in celebration of Seamen’s Day, which is today. The celebration of Iceland’s important fishing industry is also taking place all over the country.

Sailing trips from Reykjavik are being offered, a new fresh fish market has been opened and guided tours of the old city harbour are among the highlights.

This year, Reykjavik’s Festival of the Sea is paying homage to the Faroe Islands and a group of Faroese seamen are guests of honour, having sailed to Iceland this week in an old wooden yacht called Westward Ho!.

The Westfjords village of Sudureyri takes Seamen’s Day very seriously; including a regatta, a rowing competition and football. There was also a ball last night with live music.

Grindavik, in the southwest of Iceland, has also been celebrating since early yesterday.
