Local elections in Iceland today

iceland-sattelite23Icelandic voters are today casting their ballots in local elections across the country.

Long standing coalitions could fall in the most fiercely fought municipal elections for years. In Reykjavik, a brand new party called the Best Party is fighting for the first time and some polls suggest it could achieve an outright majority in City Hall.

Elsewhere recent political disenchantment is also threatening power changes. In the northwest municipality of Isafjardarbaer (Isafjordur, Hnifsdalur, Thingeyri, Flateyri and Sudureyri) a party of students is taking part again and this time they are hoping to get at least one councillor elected – a feat unimaginable at the last election.

The best party is the top party in Reykjavik,
when 20.000 votes had been counted last night the progressive party had 13 votes :)

Jon Gnarr will rule the city, when he celebrated victory he said to his supporters, “Welcome to the Revolution”.
