Iceland has become known for its knitting. Not just for the plentiful supply of sheep and the wide array of knitted goods available in the most unlikely of shops; but also for the fact that everyone of all ages seems to be knitting for fun during every spare moment: in meetings, at school, on the bus, you name it!
As a result, the authors of the best-selling book Prjonaperlur have decided to release an English translation for the world – it is called “Iceland Knits”:
“In the past couple of years, Iceland has come alive with knitting activity. Everybody seems to be knitting and designing their own stuff, and we wanted to capture some of that energy in this book. We are really happy with the results and hope you like it as much as we do!
“This book contains around 50 knitting and crochet patterns designed by 20 Icelandic knitters. The knitters come from all over Iceland and have varying levels of knitting experience. We call them the Icelandic knitting grassroots. The projects are suitable for knitters of all skill levels, from the beginner to the experienced. They’re a mix of the contributors’ all-time favourite patterns, designs they’ve developed and honed over many years or even projects that have a special sentimental value for them. There are also a few that were designed especially for this book.
“There’s a strong knitting tradition in Iceland, and many of the patterns in the book come from that, although most of them have a modern twist. Icelandic wool is used for quite a few patterns, and while we hope that you’ll get a chance to use Icelandic wool for at least some of your projects, you can of course substitute it for other kinds of yarn.
“This book was first published in Iceland in November 2009, and soon became a best-seller. It’s meant to cheer and inspire you to tackle new projects and to keep on knitting and knitting…and knitting…And crocheting too!” – Halldora Skarphedinsdottir and Erla Sigurdardottir
