Former Icelandic president’s statue disappears in Finland

vigdis-finnbogadottir-littleA bust of former Icelandic president, Vigdis Finnbogadottir, which was on display in Kivinokka in Helsinki, has disappeared.

Helsingin Sanomat reports that the disappearance was discovered yesterday morning by the artist Maija Hyvonen, who made the statue.

The Finnish police and art lovers alike searched the cafe and surroundings, but with no success.

Vigdis Finnbogadottir was elected Icelandic president in 1980 and served four terms until 1996 – which is the maximum number of terms allowed. She was the world’s first female elected head of state.

Margaret Thatcher may have become British Prime Minister the year before, but she was not head of state — and Queen Elizabeth II is female; but she was not elected to her post.
