Iceland’s Shanghai EXPO pavillion formally opens

HeklaThe Icelandic pavilion at the Shangai World EXPO 2010 is receiving its official opening today; but large queues have formed outside the pavilion already on the four unofficial openings so far. In fact 22,000 guests have already seen the pavilion before it even opened!

Kristin A. Arnadottir, Iceland’s ambassador to China and the pavilion’s designer and organisers were on hand to personally welcome the first guests with Icelandic gifts.

Iceland’s participation in EXPO 2010 is to introduce Iceland as a destination for tourism, cutting edge geothermal technology, Icelandic innovation and to nurture Sino-Icelandic political ties.

The pavilion is the collaboration of over 60 Icelandic partners and is a co-operative project organised by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Reykjavik Energy, Landsvirkjun, Geysir Green Energy, Iceland Spring, The Blue Lagoon and Icelandair.

Expo pavillion – A great source of providing and updating the right information about Iceland, specially because China is one of the most thickly populated contenent with probable investors and international guest. Another thing Asians like the Chinese and Japanese are lovers of sea foods, gourment dishes and health spa. Lastly, the exchange rate here is favourable and Iceland provides all the necessary electronic technologies.
Needed to be establish is trust and confidence in every economic venture. Tourism now also have great offers. Do maximize everything for better economic gains.

I, Gummi, having just returned from Shanghai, share my review:

The Icelandic Pavilion, winner of several design competitions, is shaped like an enormous open-eyed fish. You enter through the gaping mouth, leave your shoes by the front teeth, and navigate the tongue-shaped carpet to the esophagus.

A descending path leads the visitor into the fish’s stomach (aka the food court), then into the large intestines. Bjork’s haunting melodies are piped in through the gills to illuminate great moments in Icelandic history. Who knew our wonderful country was colonized by Norwegian tax-cheats and a human kidnapping ring? Our leading exports are shellfish and writs of habeas corpus.

The fish bowels are of course dedicated to the heroic Icelandic banking industry (the Pavilion was designed in late 2007). The volcano-shaped gift shop explodes every 30 seconds. Strongly recommended: a visit to Jaegermeister Hall and the Alka-Seltzer Pavilion.

    Afram,
    G.
