Despite staying open while the Eyjafjallajokull volcanic ash was wreaking havoc on European aviation, Keflavik International Airport in Iceland is set to close today (Friday) for the first time. Airlines are working on alternatives to keep passengers moving.
From 06.00 this morning, Keflavik International Airport will close for at least one day due to the volcanic ash cloud.
Icelandair has decided to fly its Transatlantic passengers through Glasgow instead of Keflavik. It will also provide connecting flights between Glasgow, Copenhagen and Oslo.
Passengers departing or arriving Iceland itself will be sent to Akureyri in the north of Iceland and free coach transfers to Reykjavik will be provided.
At the time of writing, Iceland Express had not finalised its plans; but had already brought its 07.00 London flight forward by eight hours.
Passengers are requested to keep a close eye on www.icelandair.com, www.kefairport.com and www.icelandexpress.com as the situation can change quickly.
