It is not clear what caused the strange smell on board an American Airlines jet which made and emergency landing in Iceland yesterday.
All available police and rescue teams in Southwest Iceland were put on high alert yesterday afternoon when an American Airlines passenger jet made an emergency landing at Keflavik International Airport, RUV reports.
The pilots decided to land in Iceland due to a strange smell on board which had already caused some passengers to feel ill. At that stage the unfolding situation could have been very serious and it was decided to put emergency crews on high alert. Upon landing, all passengers left the jet and the luggage hold was emptied and inspected closely by ground staff.
Five passengers received treatment at Keflavik for headaches and others received counselling from the Icelandic Red Cross, but nobody was injured. The release of gases with negative health effects on board aircraft is taken extremely seriously.
Investigation into what released the strong odour continues; but in the meantime another American Airlines plane arrived last night to take passengers onward to Texas. The plane was en route from Paris to Dallas and had 149 people on board, plus 12 crew.

A job well done for safety and security. Congratulations.
Well done to all at American Airlines, does anyone know what the smell was?
Hi you all in Iceland .. Trust you are not in too much trouble up there… I am from South East England on the coast, and ( making light of it ) have never , seen the sky above here without jet traces. It is a delight.I hope Katya looks after you all well, and does not get TOOO excited. All the best, Ian.
According to news reports, volcano ash entering the aircondition system can cause headaches and other symptoms for the passengers. It’s also hazardous for engines, the surface of wings and fuselages, and windows. Works like a sandblast. That’s why all across Europe jet airliners have been grounded today.
I was on that flight from paris to dallas put did not smell
