The plover is come!

plover-littleIceland’s harbinger of summer is the golden plover whose arrival to the country every year is welcomed as a sure sign of winter’s passing – whatever the weather is doing.

After recent sightings in southeast Iceland, the golden plover has now definitively arrived and has been seen and photographed in Reykjavik City.

Icelandic schoolchildren welcome the plover with a song called “Lóan er komin”, including the line: “The plover is come to bid farewell to the snow”.

The plover’s early arrival this year has not heralded an end to the snow yet; but heavy snowfall yesterday in the northwest will only have pleased Isafjordur residents whose famous ski festival was in jeopardy.

Isafjordur’s internationally popular Easter music festival, Aldrei For Eg Sudur (I Never Went South), will go ahead this Friday and Saturday whatever the weather. Further details on www.aldrei.is
