Safety advice issued for Iceland volcano visitors

Icembl.RAX_.little2landic Search and Rescue professionals today released a warning to leisure visitors to reiterate that the Fimmvorduhals volcano in South Iceland is producing poisonous gases that the visitor may not even notice.

Sulphur, fluorine, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are all coming from the volcano. Carbon monoxide is odourless and deadly.

People are being warned against going into Hrunagil where the lava is flowing, because the gorge there is narrow and is likely collecting the poisonous gases. The gases are naturally heavy and build up from the ground up.

People visiting the volcano are requested to remain standing up if the weather is still. Remaining upwind of the volcano is also highly recommended.

Plans to re-open the Thorsmork road were abandoned today due to an increase in lava flow in Hvanna. Police are guarding closed roads round the clock and have already turned away several cars this morning.

The Coastguard last night confirmed that lava is flowing from the volcano in a westerly direction in the Hvannargil gorge. The lava is said to be flowing quickly in the gorge and could soon make its way to a popular travellers’ hut well-known among hikers.

Heed informational advice / warnings for safety and security. Even cars produces carbon monoxide a colorless and odorless poisonous gas. In volcanic eruption the output is greater. Dangerous.
Also, you can see Iceland at each ebb, love for natural beauty and adventure with each accompanying challenge.
All are welcome and do be careful.

And remember folks, “Curiosity killed the foreigner!” — or, well it has, and can – so please do be careful – dont explore dangerous sites like volcano and glacier without experienced guidance and preferably, guides.
