Icesave referendum ends, first results released

Iceland-Referendum01Icelandic polling stations closed at 22.00 and initial results are being released immediately.

Voter turn out was lower than in the last parliamentary election.

With 74,151 votes counted so far nationally, 68,993 of voters have chosen to reject the December Icesave repayment deal. 93.1 percent of votes nationally have been ‘no’ votes and 1.6 percent ‘yes’.

19,300 people voted in Reykjavik North. 356 said yes, 17,738 said no and 1,206 empty ballots were cast in protest. 19,500 people voted in the Southwest region. 250 voted yes, 18,350 voted no, 850 ballots were empty and 50 were invalid.

Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir told RUV that she is not at all surprised at the result because the law the people were voting on is in fact no longer relevant as a better deal has already been offered. Finance Minister Steingrimur J. Sigfusson said he is personally surprised at how many people voted yes. Both say they are confident that the referendum outcome will not break up the government.

  1. Walt says:

    I totally agree Icelanders!

I think it is our Dutch responsibility that those thieves could operate in the Dutch banking-market.

Congratulations with the no-votes! I hope you civilians don’t have to pay one Crown or Euro at all.. and may Iceland have a healthy economy soon.

Bye and kind regards from Holland,

    Walt

  2. Lloyd (Australia) says:

I express support for Icelanders who refuse to have a debt forced on them by foreign governments, and for President Grimsson who allowed the people to express their view in a referendum.

There’s a hard task ahead to rebuild your economy, but that would produce a future of Iceland’s own design.

So what was this referendum, a joke?? Hahahaha, I did not know that the Icelandic Circus Show was going to be so funny, and for such a long time!!!

Please Iceland, keep going on like that, the world have finally discovered that this crisis have a very funny and ridiculous side!!! You really should ask Denmark to govern your country again. I don’t think there is a single competent politician in Iceland, nor a democratically mature society. You believe you are a democratic nation because they give you the opportunity of putting a paper, and decide for something that it does not need to be voted at the end… HAHAHAHA, you have to be kidding me really!!! I laugh til my stomach hurts. I could not ever imagine such a “low IQ” society ever in my life!!

  4. Anthony says:

    Whoooooosh

That the sounds of Icelands diplomatic and economic credability being flushed down the toilet.

  5. Anthony says:

Disgraceful result-all it shows is that Iceland cant live up to its obligations and would rather wallow in its victim status in the face of an imaginary bully(Britain, who simply wants its tax payers money back) than pay its debts

  6. Anna Pate' says:

congratulation Iceland i am prout of you for standing up and standing strong for your self, dont give these ******* a dime they took the risk of gambeling and lost, o well, hope they learned they’r lesson and leve you alone….GO ICELAND…DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH JUST GOT A LITTEL MORE POLICED…GOOD FOR YOU…

  7. Lloyd (Australia) says:

I hope Iceland’s negotiators with Britain and the Netherlands remember the response of General McAuliffe of the 101st Airborne when given an ultimatum by the German army during the Battle of the Bulge. His situation was very difficult, but he responded with a single word: “Nuts!”

Hang in there guys … it’s your country, it’s a democratic country, make your own decisions!

  8. Marina Caird says:

The Antics of Johanna Sigurdarsdottir realy aught to come to an end!
This historic plebicite is not just an irrelevance, and she tries to downplay it like that! SHE MUST RESIGN!
For the sake of Iceland, this thing realy should be arbitrated in court! If Icelanders will be asked to pay the debts of bankers and private shareholders in those banks, and they agree to some sort of deal, out of good will, then this deal must have broad consensus support, and must be understood by the international community that any payment to the Br and Dutch is done because of and out of national pride and integrity. I do not see how icelandic citizens should pay anything at all!The Icelandic people have spoken in this referendum, let it not rest there, there is still much they can do.

  9. robert gatt says:

congratulations iceland, these people gambled hoping to make mega bucks, they lost tuff titty, i take it a referendum on joining the eu is out the window now, keep your independence much better than being controlled by all those corrupt politicians on the gravy train in brussels

  10. Peter - London/Krakow says:

“… it’s your country, it’s a democratic country, make your own decisions!”

Taking money from your neighbours and refusing to pay it back is all about democracy? What sort of country do you live in, a prison?

    Opps..

  11. SIR EURO IS BACK says:

Anna Pate´s ” they took the risk of gambeling and lost, ”

You have described it pretty well, Icelandic banks turned out not to be serious banks from a serious country, but a BAY OF PIRATES, MAFIA AND GAMBLING POKER TABLE!! No wonder why the british did apply THE ANTITERRORIST LAW to them!

They presented themselves as HONEST AND SERIOUS BANKS, selling everyone “Iceland is a rich country, we are a very democratic society, we can take care of your money and return good interest, our country, oh my God, our country is so SAFE and so WELL ORGANIZED AND DEMOCRATIC, there is no corruption in Iceland. We are a well organized and civic NORDIC COUNTRY. TRUST IN US FOR YOUR MONEY!!”

But they turn out to be MAFIA, PIRATES, and all you can think on those lines…
They were ROBBING money in Europe to bring it to Iceland ( I guess the traditional viking raids-style of economy) and ICELANDERS CALL THEMSELVES THE RICHEST NATION IN THE WORLD. Look now how RUINED you are.

Icelanders have lived WELL ABOVE & BEYOND their possibilities. I don’t think it is FAIR, that thousands of HONEST WORKERS AND PENSIONERS in Europe see themselves on the street after having saved all their live by living like POOR AND MODEST PEOPLE, so Icelandic RED NECKS WITH LOW EDUCATION AND JUST WORKING ON FISH FACTORIES CAN DRIVE LUXURY MERCEDES AND VOLVOS AROUND, TRAVEL ABROAD OFTEN EVERY YEAR AND SAY ON YOUR VERY FACE “WE ARE THE RICHEST AND GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD”

What icelanders deserve is THE MISERY they now have. Don’t worry, don’t pay, but at the end THE WORLD IS GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW WRONG YOU ARE WITH YOUR GREED SENSE OF RICHNESS AND YOUR VIKING RACIAL SUPERIORITY!!

NO ONE IN THE WHOLE WORLD IS GOING TO TRUST THIS COUNTRY ANYMORE, SO WHEREVER THEY WANT IT OR NOT, ICELAND IS SET FOR POVERTY FOR MANY DECADES TO COME!!! IF YOU TURN YOUR BACK TO THE WORLD IT WILL TURN ITS BACK ON YOU!!

  12. SIR EURO IS BACK says:

Lloyd “Hang in there guys … it’s your country, it’s a democratic country, make your own decisions”

Yes hang in there guys…IN POVERTY AND RUINED!! HAHAHAHA :D)))

Iceland a democratic country?? Well, then I AM NAPOLEON !!! HAHAHAHA :D)))

  13. Anthony says:

    Lloyd(Australia)

Some how i think you would be reacting differently if Austrailian tax money had been used to prop up a bank that collapsed not due to Australian poor practice, but Icelandic poo practice-and then the Icelanders had refused to repay the money.

Its a case of, Iceland may be poor, but thats their problem-it remains that they have an obligation to repay their debts.

They have proven that they are not to be trusted, so will suffer the economic consequences

  14. nelson says:

Iceland people you ARE STRONG, YOU ARE AMAZING!!!!:))

corrupts have to go to the prison!

    Cheers from Lisbon,Portugal!
