It is unlikely that Saturday’s Icesave referendum in Iceland will be postponed, the Prime Minister said.
An un-named Icelandic government representative told RUV that the referendum on December’s Icesave bill will definitely go ahead this Saturday unless a new contract with the Netherlands and the UK can be reached early today. Icelandic negotiators met with their British counterparts in London for much of yesterday.
The meeting ended yesterday evening but the outcome of the meeting has not yet been formally stated. News is expected this morning.
Icelandic Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir told media yesterday evening that it is unlikely the referendum will be postponed or cancelled even if a new deal was struck last night or this morning. There is no longer enough time to pass a new deal into law before Saturday, she explained.
Finance Minister Steingrimur J. Sigfusson disagreed slightly, saying that it is still technically possible to stop the referendum going ahead; but added that it is now highly unlikely.
The offer the Icelandic negotiators took to London last week was rejected and the British counteroffer was subsequently rejected by Reykjavik. The negotiators have since been working on interest and technical issues. Sigurdardottir said lowering Iceland’s payment burden and lowering the interest rate have been top of the agenda.

With the creation of the new government after the collapsed of the old one, agreement between the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister was in unison. Why is the change of heart ? Is it conflict of interest ?
It would be gratifying to know that in union there is strenght.
It is very important to vote, some people say that we shouldent vote anymore that this is a farce, that a better deal is allready ther, but they forget that the bill passed on December is still in effect unless the people vote it down, if people dont vote, the bill remains. The president did not rejected the bill it in fact is law, he only gave people the chance to rject it, if we dont rejecet it, that is in fact effective as we speak.
HAHAHA, what a theatre really. I can´t just laugh more and more with this situation and the way icelanders behave… First they rob the money from this politically corrupted country and now THEY WANT TO GIVE EUROPEANS A LESSON ON DEMOCRACY!!! HAHAHAHAH, what a punch of clowns really.
Basically icelanders are given the opportunity of choosing between:
A) We don’t want to pay and we want to keep isolated and poor, and the world to totally turn its back on us.
B) Lets show the world that we can correct our mistakes and that we are not going to let, ever again, a punch of PIRATES AND CORRUPTED POLITICIANS to rule over this country.
What Iceland needs is to RECOVER WORLDS CREDIBILITY ( FOREIGN INVESTORS), not this CIRCUS!!!
AMEN
Watch the clip “De Val van Balkenende” below..best adaptation of Hitler Bunker scene yet..Balkenende is the Prime Minister of Nederlands and Enemy of Iceland.
How effortlessly actual Balkenende quotes flow from Hitler’s mouth “What is needed is strength! not the easy way out!’…not to mention the uncanny physical resemblence when Hitler wears glasses..
In an eerily similar storyline to the original 3rd Reich version…

I hope for Iceland’s sake it votes to pay up. I’m British but had no savings in Icesave. The UK has been hit pretty hard and it’s not going to get much better any time soon, but we will get through it. UK tax payers like me have already bailed out people from the UK with Icesave accounts, and on the grand scale of things have compassion about what has happened to Iceland. Pay it back really slowly and nobody will care, but refuse to pay and god knows what our government will be forced to do because of the tabloid media backlash. What Iceland owes us is a drop in the ocean compared our debt, but we can’t default on ours. default on yours at your own peril.
THEY WANT TO GIVE EUROPEANS A LESSON ON DEMOCRACY!!! HAHAHAHAH, what a punch of clowns really.
