A four year-old girl playing in an old house in central Reykjavik on Friday fell out of a third floor window (called the second floor by those who describe the first floor as the ground floor) and escaped with a broken foot.
Despite her extreme ordeal, the little girl was allowed to return home yesterday with her parents – who will now be taking more care with the child safety latches on their windows. Everybody agrees the little girl was extremely lucky.
Public health officials in Iceland are taking the opportunity to remind everybody that old houses are considerably more dangerous for young children; but that a wide variety of safety equipment, guards, latches and locks are available to childproof older, character-filled homes.
