A mother and her son fell down a crevasse in the ice on a glacier trip on Saturday.

The pair was part of an organised trip and fell down the deep crack in the ice while walking around on the western part of the Langjokull glacier during a scheduled stop.

Rescuers flew to the glacier by helicopter but were too late to save the woman’s life.

The boy spent the night in the intensive care unit in Reykjavik, but he is expected to make a full recovery, Visir.is reports.
