Over 5,000 fish processing jobs in Grimsby and Hull alone rely on Icelandic fish supplies arriving regularly and on time.
At the time the British government used anti-terrorist laws to freeze Icelandic assets in the UK in autumn 2008, fish arrivals to Humberside stopped altogether. This was due to a misunderstanding that the freeze applied to all business transactions. It took the Bank of England and the Grimsby FMA to get the shipments going again, Fish Update reports.
The current political crisis between Britain and Iceland is seen as the most serious since the Cod Wars, which ended in the 1970s.
The fish supplies are likely to keep flowing this time around; but fears remain on Humberside that the worsening political relationship between the nations will affect the excellent personal and business relationships the region enjoys with Iceland.

then do not support brown. anyway brown is the color of poo(dirt)lol:).
Brown IS poo. Poo is too kind a word. He is a bully and a power slut.
Almost all Icelandic fish is exported to Britain and Germany frozen and turned into consumer products and sold by Brits and Germans,
the 5000 jobs in Hull and Grimsby are only a small part of jobs who will be lost if the EEA deal falls apart or the British Gov uses terrorist laws or sanctions to attack Iceland,

Hardly Iceland is no economic power! I can live with out fish! Brown is doing the right thing I support the goverment all the way with this! Iceland is not getting away with it this time, like the cod wars!
Always playing the victom card, its not my fauilt I like big 4×4′s and robing other peoples money!
Is this supposed to be a veiled threat for the British? Accept our conditions, or we’ll stop selling fish (and cut off our last source for foreign revenue).
Iceland must come up with more effective threats. How about inviting the Russian Defence Minister to discuss the building of a new naval base?
then move your b-side to the anarchist Italy, Jamie ^^
Hahahahaha …
We’ll make sure those people are somehow compensated from the money which will be paid to us by Iceland. Perhaps by finding them a more reliable party to build excellent business relationships with.
> I can live with out fish!
But UK and other member state where EU Common Fisheries Policy has been in since early 1970s certainly cant because only Icelandic has the fish stocks to provide because we did have responsible scientific approach to it.
( And not huge fleets of Spain and Greece hoovering up fish from all ‘ common ‘ waters within EU. )
Is easy to understand why you,Jamie can live without fish, as it is well-known that fish is good for the brain
tomas brage, bark all you like! Iceland will still have to pay up, with the intrest! whether you like it or not!
I imagine that a lot more Icelandic jobs depend on those fish exports than British jobs.
After all, Britain can always import fish from other countries easily enough.
Icelandic jobs and UK jobs need the fish to keep coming, but the UK needs it a lot less. 5,000 jobs in a country of 70 million opposed to 5,000+ jobs in a country of 250,000. Work it out!
Sorry Iceland your bankers killed you and that’s it. Brown was wrong and heavy handed but that changes nothing. You will have to pay up sooner or later.
C H Ingoldby… Actually the UK can’t import Atlantic Cod or Haddock from any other countries, Norway supplies a certain amount but around 80% in the UK comes from Iceland. It simply doesn’t exist anywhere else.
>Icelandic jobs and UK jobs need the fish to keep coming, but the UK needs it a lot less
Of course tell that to those 5,000 people employed in Hull and Grimsby.
Already they have seen their livelyhoods crushed by the EU common fishreies policy.
It’s just wrong this diagreements between UK and Icelandic governments hurt trade between us — long term trading partners.
( And as that article posted by Axel does remind us, just how bad the actions of Brown and Darling where in effecting Iceland’s ability to access international financial system back in October 2008. )
I still dont understand wh people of UK put up with being in EU instead of going back to be a member of EFTA. UK founder of EFTA in 1960.
What reasons does Britain have to stay in EU after Lisbon Treaty was passed ? Will some one please explain it.

“But at the time the crisis also had the effect of almost halting shipments of fish between Iceland and the Humber when the [ UK ] clearing banks mistakenly thought the decision to freeze Icelandic banking interests in the UK applied to normal business transactions.
In the end intervention by the Bank of England and the Grimsby FMA succeeded in settling the situation. More than 5,000 Grimsby and Hull fish processing jobs depend on fish supplies from Iceland.”
( More confirmation of what was talked about here way back November 2008 :

Nice work Brown and Darling !
No doubt this will drop off the recent comments box before someone who knows sees it (hint Alex!).
Nevertheless, I saw the following:
The FMA also told the Minister of their concerns over Iceland’s decision to impose a five per cent levy on whole fish exports which the Reykjavik Government may well increase to ten or 15 per cent.

What! I thought the EEA was set up precisely to prevented trade barriers such as this. i.e.
“The EEA is based on the same “four freedoms” as the European Community: the free movement of goods, persons, services, and capital among the EEA countries.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Economic_Area
Any idea what’s going on?
Obviously the fish levy is aimed at maximizing foreign currency revenue for Iceland. Whether it is legal under EFTA or EEA regulation I am not sure.
But it does show that jeopardizing a long term trading partnership between Iceland and the UK would not be beneficial to either country. Hence the need to settle the dispute amicably.

The Icelandic state pays for the Coastguard who makes sure everyone plays by the rules and is in charge of security at sea,
we also pay for research ships who measures the size and condition of all fishing stocks.

Maybe the minister having problems financing the institutions that are necessary for the fishing fleet to operate,
we are building a new Coastguard ship in a ship yard in Talcahuano Chile, it is now being finished in a shipyard belonging to the Chile navy.

The only problem i see in this Iceland/Britain busyness is that its not wise to have all your eggs in the same bucket, so if the relations continue to deteriorate further it would be smart to find other markets for our products to defend ourselves against financial crime, like terrorist laws, or extortion of some kind,
its still in fresh memory when all money transaction was cut off between Iceland and Europe at the same time as all of our banks collapsed and Iceland was declared a terrorist state.
I think you missed the point Axel. Every country can justify a trade barrier.
It turns out that fish are probably not covered by the free movement of goods.
An export levy on fish is not a violation of EEA trade agreements.
