25 accidental deaths in Iceland during 2009

rsz_1iceland_satellite25 individuals lost their lives in accidents in Iceland last year – a decrease of five on 2008.

The majority of those, or 17, died in traffic accidents; three died at work ; three drowned; one died at sea, and one died in an air accident. Nobody died from accidents at home or during the pursuit of hobbies.

A press release from the Landsbjorg Accident Prevention Association also stated that 21 of the 25 accidental deaths in 2009 were men. No children 14 years-old or less died in accidents for the second year in a row. The Association says this is hopefully partly due to their concerted child safety campaigns in recent years.

Three Icelanders were victims of fatal accidents abroad, but their deaths are counted in the tallies of those other countries.
