Icesave bill thrown into disarray

icesave1-03923945The Icelandic parliament’s debate which was scheduled to start at 10.30 today has suffered repeated delays.

The future of the Icesave bill now hangs in the balance after new information emerged from a British law firm which the opposition parties claim has been deliberately hidden from them. Finance Minister, Steingrimur J. Sigfusson and Chairman of the Parliamentary Finance Committee, Gudbjartur Hannesson have both rejected the claim.

Instead of a full parliamentary debate, Althingi has been busy today with meetings of the Finance Committee and between party leaders.

According to Visir.is, the chairman of the Icesave Contract Committee refused to attend the Finance Committee meeting on principal.

One of Iceland’s biggest decisions in recent memory and the process is turning into a farce. Unbelievable.
