Iceland’s Education Minister says that the newly confirmed changes to the laws on further education and the increase of charges for evening classes are completely necessary given the cutbacks being made in the national budget.
The Althingi national parliament voted to increase evening class charges threefold just before Christmas.
According to the new law, a 35 unit course at evening school will now cost around ISK 260,000 (USD 2,040) to complete. Further and higher education establishments will now be allowed to charge ISK 7,500 per unit of a course instead of ISK 2,500.
Katrin Jakobsdottir, the Minister for Education, says that the increases are necessary due to cutbacks; but she said that as many savings as possible are also being made from cutting back on additional, less fundamental services, Visir.is reports.

What dit the 35 unit course cost before the changes?
So, you have a left-green government increasing the cost of adult education by 300%… WTF.
I think the Icelandic government is a joke and they live in their own clueless world that they simply cannot see how in a mess a few rich individuals conned Iceland and they together with the government continue NOT to take responsibility for their actions but shamelessly continue to let Icelanders be it citizens or immigrants living in Iceland carry the load/burden for them. Many of the people can barely make it on the wages they earn as the cost of living + debt has increased incredibly whilst the krona has lost its value to the extent having IsK100,000 doesn´t do much for you, it won´t even cover your bills i.e. rent/mortgage + heating, electricity, and food etc. Many have lost their jobs so the other reasonable thing they can do is go back to school and raising the cost of further education is utterly wrong. For those who are currently in employment and many are barely making it, of course it makes sense if one decides to further their education so when things get better they can reach for a higher goal i.e. better job and with them still working and CONTRIBUTING TO TAXES AND UNEMPLOYMENT FUND which goes to help out the government in paying those out of the job, it is shameful that the government goes and hurriedly votes to increase evening school tuition fee threefolds! Have the government of Iceland totally lost their plot? The people need to get on their feet and fight for their basic human right, affordable education for ALL. Get the government working FOR the PEOPLE and NOT FOR THE PEOPLE WITH MONEY!
