Icesave result expected today

alþingiThe second reading of the Icesave bill will continue in Iceland’s Althingi parliament today after being suspended late Saturday night with 11 MPs still waiting to speak. The session begins again today at 10.30, although Icesave is not the first item on the agenda. If the bill passes, it will go to the President for ratification which is nearly always granted; but public pressure is mounting for President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson to send this particular bill to a public vote.

Has the President said anything very recently regarding Icesave? What are the odds of him referring it to a referendum?

  2. Alexander E. says:

    Has the President said anything

    Jim. It doesn’t matter.
The only thing he cares about is himself. So if something benefits him – he will use the chance. If it hurts his pleasant life – why bother?
From my point Iceland could get a lot if this post is dropped (huge saving to the taxpayers) and the residence turned into hotel – with “special” status. Many silly people would pay extra to stay at “president’s place”

But InDefense action is really interesting.
At least their attempt to give people a chance to say what they think about the mess.

  4. Jimbo (the original Jim) says:

    @Alexander E.
I think it more likely that the President will focus on not doing the wrong thing than on doing the right thing. By that, I mean his decision-making will probably choose the option that has the least risk, rather than the best option. If he decided to refer Icesave to a referendum and the subsequent public rejection put in motion a sequence of events which knocked Iceland back to the financial dark ages, then his presidency would be remembered for that one awful decision alone. And that wouldn’t be much of a legacy after he retires…

ALEXANDER “At least their attempt to give people a chance to say what they think about the mess.”

THIS JUST PLAYING WITH PEOPLE. MAKING PEOPLE BELIEVE THEY CAN CHOOSE BETWEEN:

    -PAYING FOR ICESAVE.
    OR
-PAYING FOR THE CONSEQUENCES FOR NOT PAYING ICESAVE.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS BEST?? OR, WORST??

WHAT THE ICELANDIC MAFIA POLITIC-PIRATES ARE SAYING IS THIS ( TRANSLATED TO STREET TALKING) :

“WE ARE NOT GOING TO BRING BACK TO THE COUNTRY ALL THE BILLIONS WE HAVE STOLEN AND HIDDEN IN COUNTRIES LIKE CAYMAN ISLANDS. WE ARE NOT GOING TO MAKE REAL INVESTIGATION BECAUSE THEN THE PARLIAMENT WOULD HAVE TO BE TURNED INTO A PRISION. WE ARE BETTER OFF LIKE THIS AS WE AND OUR FAMILIES HAVE JUST FILLED THEIR POCKETS. AND NOW THE REST OF YOU, POOR IGNORANTS, WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR OUR CRIMES. WE WILL KEEP THE POWER AND THE MONEY, AND YOU WILL SURVIVE ON POTATOS. GOOD LUCK ICELANDERS!!!”

  6. Axel says:

Turns out the president is going to India in January to accept some kind of award, i wonder if that has been arranged to create a excuse for the president, so his sidekick can do this for him,
if that is the case he should stay in India.

I think the icesave deal should be rejected, Iceland is going to be bombarded with all kinds of law suits soon and the times ahead will be extreamly hard,
if we are ruined i would like to go down with guns blazing, to accept this deal is to surrender and die a slow death, just not our style.

  7. woj says:

Iceland has to pay whatever, so it’s all just a mere formality.

And to those who cannot find posts because of search system deficancy here at IceNews ( no offense Alex it is fact ) here is most active thread on this topic :

Jim. I read that and can’t see anything really controversial about it. However, as it’s all over MBL and probably other Icelandic news sites, I assume that I’m missing something.

Incidentally, the “new approach” mentioned is the bond one fleshed out below:

It’s always worth reading Gary Roberts’ response to the idea :) :

  10. Jimbo (original Jim) says:

Yep, I doubt any British will find Thorlaksson’s email that controversial as there are just two “faux pas”: attempting to influence the IMF and attempting to transfer the conversation to personal email.

Gestsson’s bond idea was probably worth a try! LOL…
