The Icelandic government’s proposed changes to the tax system have undergone big changes in previous days. The latest idea involves leaving the system almost unchanged for those with low and medium earnings.
Both government parties have been involved in a frenzy of activity trying to hammer out a workable and fair way to increase the state’s tax income. The pressure is on to work fast because the new system is due to come into force on 1st January.
Sources talking to national broadcaster RUV indicate that it is mostly the proposed changes to individuals’ income tax that have changed. The newest thinking within government is that the tax system will remain largely unchanged for people earning less than ISK 600,000 or 650,000 per month. The personal discount will be increased from its current ISK 42,000 (meaning that the first 42,000 kronur of everybody’s monthly pay is tax exempt) to help those in society on the lowest wages. The money earning part of the plan is to double taxes on the highest earnings, with one higher tax bracket starting at ISK 600,000 or 650,000 and another at 900,000.
These ideas were among the things on the agenda during a meeting of the parliamentary groups of the government parties yesterday. The proposed changes are not yet confirmed and could be subject to further changes before being formally presented to the public, probably later this week.

So, converting the currency, the plan is to increase taxes on earnings over £35K per year and double taxes on earnings over £55K per year. So, what is the current percentage tax rate in Iceland on earnings over, say, ISK 900,000?

Looks like a flat 37.2% after the initial allowance. Not very progressive, but I’ve always liked the idea of flat rates – anything to make it easier.

So, it looks like the new plan means 74.4% tax on earnings over £55K per year. Interesting!
More likely 61.3%. Sorry, I should have expanded:
24.1% State income tax
13.1% Local income tax
So I suspect we’re only doubling the 24.1% element and leaving the 13.1% the same. At least as far as this report goes.

THE 700 EUROS A MONTH REFERS TO THE UNEMPLOYMENT PENSION ( WHEN THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO ITS MAXIMUM PAYMENT) WICH HAPPENS TO BE 700 EUROS A MONTH AT THE ACTUAL RATE OF 184 ISK 1 EURO. WHILE IN COUNTRIES LIKE IN SPAIN THE MAXIMUM PENSION IS ABOUT 1200 EUROS, CLOS E TO THE DOUBLE. AND PRICES IN SPAIN HAVENT RAISED DRAMATICALLY LIKE IN ICELAND.
