Generation gap in support for President of Iceland

olafur-ragnarAround a third of respondents to a recent survey want Iceland’s president, Olafur Ragnar Grimsson to resign from his post.

In the survey carried out by Birfrost University Research Department on behalf of Stod 2 News, respondents were asked how strongly they agreed or disagreed with the statement that President Grimsson should step down.

62 percent disagreed with the statement and 29 percent agreed that the president should resign. That means that nearly a third want Grimsson to leave Bessastadir, the presidential residence, according to Visir.is. 10 percent of respondents neither agreed nor disagreed with the statement.

The results of the survey suggest the President’s strongest opponents are men aged 45 to 54 in the Reykjavik capital region. His biggest supporters, on the other hand, appear to be the 65-75 year-olds – only 12 percent of whom wish him to leave office.

1,350 people aged 18-75 were randomly chosen from the National Registry from all over Iceland. The research was carried out between 26 October and 3 November and 859 of those selected chose to take part.

    Bjork for President!

I vote for Dorrit. She and Jóhanna can wipe Iceland back in shape real good!

And still no American Ambassador, since he so seriously insulted the last one. We’ll be lucky to get one before next January.

    More hopeless non-news.

The title could so easily be “President of Iceland wins 62% approval rating”.

More than can be said for most other Heads of State and national leaders, except those whose corrupt election apparatus manufactures their votes. At least President Grimsson gets a resounding approval in what is most likely a fair and honest survey.

    Good for him.

I agree, Julia. I saw the original bit on the TV and IceNews seems to have toned it down. The message in Stod 2 is that a third of people want him gone….he might as well just resign now.

But in fact you’re right that a 62 percent approval rating is actually pretty good for a president. Especially when you add in the people who can’t/won’t make up their minds either way!
