Calls for a single united Nordic nation

kalmar-unionMany things come up for discussion at meetings of Nordic Prime Ministers. One thing on the PMs’ agenda todayhas particularly piqued public interest: Swedish historian Gunnar Wetterberg’s suggestion that the Nordic countries revive the Kalmar Union and become one single nation once more.

Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark would become queen of the whole new country, because Margrethe I was queen during the time of the Kalmar Union, RUV reports. All the Scandinavian nations were united as one between 1397 and 1523.

Wetterberg says that a single Nordic nation would have the world’s tenth biggest economy and could have significant influence on the world stage.

Wetterberg wrote his ideas in a Dagens Nyheter newspaper article yesterday; but if the Prime Ministers’ discussion is anything to go by, Margrethe II will not be made Queen of Nordicland in the very near future.

I think the PMs get some panics when issues like this comes to discussion, just because the public support of the idea might be a bit to high ;-)

The article in Swedish is here http://www.dn.se/opinion/debatt/de-fem-nordiska-landerna-bor-ga-ihop-i-en-ny-union-1.982761

Followed by more than 400 comments from all countries.

  2. Gryffin says:

Yes to a Nordic Union. No to Margrethe II as a Queen…she has no legitimacy, and given the past history of Denmark as a colonizer, many scandinavians (Icelanders?) might feel a little ackward. But the whole thing is an interesting idea that deserves further investigation…

  3. An Cat Dubh says:

Does that include Iceland, the Faeroe Islands, Greenland, and Finland? I mean, I can understand Denmark, Sweden, and Norway uniting, their languages are extremely similar, but not the other Scandinavian countries.

  4. Balkanson says:

Hope Iceland will never be in EUSSR or Nordic SSR.

  5. loans_jim says:

If the united nation would be like United States of Nordic, then bravo! Otherwise, it could be a another socialst union.

  6. west says:

I know that this off the topic, but here is some Icelandic news from Iceland West:

  7. O. L. says:

My position is clear: one language, one country. No to a Scandinavian union.
[An Cat Dubh] Finland is not a Scandinavian nation.

  8. zerozen says:

    Finally a really good Idea.
    Sounds very intresting

  9. Bromley86 says:

    >My position is clear

Great. Now we just need the positions of the other 19.5m people. This is going to be a long thread.

  10. SIR EURO IS BACK says:

HAHA, MORE OF THE USUAL NORDIC STUFF. ALL UNITED AND BLA BLA BLA, SCANDINAVIAN HISTORY IS MAINLY ABOUT HOW YOU HAVE BEEN TREATING EACH OTHER LIKE DOGS. CLAN AGAINST CLAN, VILLAGE AGAINST VILLANGES, TOWNS AGAINST TOWNS, REGIONS AGAINST REGIONS, AND COUNTRIES AGAINST COUNTRIES.

I WOULD SAY THAT INDEPENDENCE MOVEMENTS IN SCANDINAVIA ARE WAY MUCH STRONGER THAN ANY ROMANTICIST SENSE OF UNION. TO START WITH, THERE ARE SO MANY CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC DIFFERENCES. IF YOU ONLY KNEW HOW MANY LANGUAGES ARE IN NORWAY AND SWEDEN. AND I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH FINNISH. AND BY THE WAY. WHAT ABOUT THE SAMY PEOPLE? ARE YOU GOING TO FORCE THEM TO BECOME MORE A PART OF THIS UNION MESS? OR ARE YOU GOING TO LET THEM FINALLY GET THEIR INDEPENDENCE??

BECAUSE, WHAT IS REALLY INCREDIBLE IS THAT TWO OF THE COUNTRIES THAT CLAIM TO BE MODELS OF DEMOCRACY ( NORWAY AND SWEDEN) ARE EXACTLY THE TWO COUNTRIES WHO KEEP DIVIDED A WHOLE NATION. THE SAMI NATION. THEY HAVE THEIR OWN CULTURE AND LANGUAGE BUT THEY HAVE BEEN PERSECUTED, ASSIMILATED, AND FORCED TO BE PART OF NORWAY AND SWEDEN.

I CALL FOR RESPECT OF THE FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHTS. SAMI ARE ONLY REALLY INDEPENDENT IN NORTH FINLAND. JUST ONLY 40 YEARS AGO SAMI POPULATION WAS SUBJECT TO PROJECTS OF ASSIMILATION BY NOR. AND SWED. GOVERNMENTS. WHAT A SHAME!!!

AND SOMEONE IS CALLING FOR AN UNIFIED SCANDINAVIA?? I GUESS FINNISH , WHO HAVE BECOME REALLY INDEPENDENT JUST FEW DECADES AGO, AND SAMI PEOPLE, THEY WILL SHOW YOU THEIR BIGGEST FINGER.

AND I DON´T THINK YOU WOULD GET A BETTER RESPONSE FROM FAROYANS OR GREENLANDERS….

I JUST CAN’T STOP LAUGHING AT THE ROMANTICIST-FASCIST NONSENSE ARTICLES THAT ARE POSTED SOMETIMES ON ICENEWS. THEY HAPPEN TO BE ARTICLES DEFENDING IDEAS THAT ARE IN THE SAME LINE OF THE ICELANDIC SENSE OF SCANDINAVIAN SUPERIORITY AND DREAMS OF VIKING ERA.

WE LIVE IN 2009, AND STILL A PROCESS OF INDEPENDENCE NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED.

FOR THE ALIENABLE RESPECT OF HUMAN RIGHTS. FOR A BETTER WORLD. FOR A WORLD WHERE NATIONS AND THEIR PEOPLE ARE FREE TO CHOOSE THEIR FUTURE AND FREE FROM COLONIALISM AND OPPRESSION.

RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, RESPECT FOR GREENLANDERS AND SAMI PEOPLE, NOW!! RESPECT FOR NATIONS RIGHT TO DETERMINATION AND SELF GOVERNMENT

  11. Jim says:

Why all share Margrethe II as your Queen when you can soon all share Blair as your President.

  12. I have long advocated what Wetterberg writes in his article. The problem is the Nordics loathe each other.
Countries are delusions projected by states in order to rule arbitrary populations. It’s more efficient to have a federal administration than loose fragments. It might even rehabilitate Samis, Jutes, Gots and Scanians etc.
Language: English of course. It’s a Nordic language; besides, official languages are just as articial impositions as countries themselves.

Me too….please stop posting with caps on : even if i don’t read your comments almost anymore, it’s really disturbing.Just like when ads are broadcasted on tv by pumping up the volume (it happends here in Italy, probably illegal in the rest of the EU).Really disturbing.

  14. O. L. says:

English is not a Nordic language. It has Germanic roots, like Scandinavian languages, but that doesn’t mean it’s a Nordic language.

Ok, It seems next time I should read news from Iceland somewhere else for personal reasons :(

No, i really didn’t understand and frankly i don’t understand most of the stuff that you write as well.Anyway, goodbye…

Ci sono pieni dei siti nel’Internet per questo. IcelandReview.com. Grapevine.is… Io leggio là.
(Sorry if my Italian is all broken… Haven’t spoken it in ages.)

  18. English is too a Nordic language! Its basic structure comes from Jutish, Anglish, and Saxon. If it isn’t Nordic, neither is Frisian or Jutish. Did you forget German is Nordic? Anyway that’s academic; the obvious advantage is that everyone in Scandinavia already speaks it. Plus if you adopt that as your administrative language, Northerners can become further integrated in global civilization.
Wetterberg is a fool in suggesting Margaret and Copenhagen should be queen and capital. They need to set up a federal district (say in Oestfold), and have a rotating president like the Swiss. It would be easy if humans were rational. Germany and Italy reunited, why not the hairy drunken Northmen?

  19. densou says:

np ;) I just teased him – I was curious to read his reply.

Are you from Israel, An Cat Dubh ? As my last employer :p

  20. Jan Thorvaldsen says:

Interesting concept that could actually give some political and economic clout to the Nordic region. Norway would, however have no imputus to join with all their oil money.

If it were to be possible to join in some Nordic Union–take the chance to DUMP all monarchy on their royal, overstuffed asses and DUMP the state church.

  21. Daron L. Musick says:

Ancient world maps deciphered off Mayan temple by Native American stone mason.(Cherokee) Maps link old world to new. Maps also ties Egypt to Nordic countries. Faroe Islands are on maps having to do with Egyptian Pharoah’s. Maps go back to well over 3,000 b.c and match ancient sites around world. Megalithic as well. World changing Information. Maps have sites untouched by time in and out of water around world. Investors needed! Help Needed! daronmusic@gmail.com

  22. Øystein; Norway says:

@Daron – you should also check out if the Jan Mayen is on the map, as the first Mayans probably comes from that island.

  23. densou says:

    LMAO Øystein.

I assume Daron wrote this article: http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Faroe_Islands :°D

Could anyone create a page for Jan Mayen on that website ? :P

    Christian Hansen said:

I AM SORRY TO TELL YOU CHRISTIAN THAT MOST OF THE MODERN ENGLISH HAS ITS ROOTS IN LATIN. REMEMBER THAT ROMANS WHERE FOR CENTURIES IN THE BRITISH ISLANDS.

THERE ARE MORE THAN 40.000 WORDS THAT ARE LITERALLY OR DIRECTLY DERIVED FROM LATIN IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE.

STARTING FOR THE WORD LANGUAGE ITSELF ( BORROWED FROM THE FRENCH WORD LANGUAGE, FROM THE LATIN LINGUA)

AS INCREDIBLE AS IT MIGHT SOUND, ENGLISH LANGUAGE HAS ONLY A 30% OF GERMANIC ORIGIN:

” English has been called a Germanic language with a Romance vocabulary. Estimates of native words (derived from Old English) in English range from 20%–33%, with the rest made up of foreign borrowings. A large number of these borrowings are Latinate, coming directly from Latin, from Latin through one of the Romance languages particularly French and Anglo-Norman, but also Italian, Portuguese, Catalan, Occitan, or Spanish, or from some other language (such as Greek) into Latin and then into English.”

“During the English Renaissance, from around 1500–1650, some 10,000 to 12,000 words entered the English lexicon, including lexicon. Some examples include: aberration, allusion, anachronism, democratic, dexterity, enthusiasm, imaginary, juvenile, pernicious, sophisticated. Many of these words were borrowed directly from Latin, both in its classical and medieval forms. In turn, Late Latin also included borrowings from Greek.”

YOU COULD READ MORE IF YOU WANT AT:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latin_influence_in_English

A LIST OF WORDS THAT ARE BOTH FROM LATIN (AND GREEK) IN SPANISH AND ENGLISH:

    SPACE-ESPACIO

    SUBSTANCE- SUBSTANCIA

    SCIENCE- CIENCIA

    INTELLIGENCE- INTELIGENCIA

    IGNORANCE- IGNORANCIA

    BIOLOGY- BIOLOGÍA

    TECHNOLOGY- TECNOLOGÍA,

    AND A HUGE LONG ETC…

I AM AMAZED BY THE LACK OF SCIENTIFIC FUNDAMENT OF MANY OF THE COMMENTS I READ HERE. ANY KID AT PRIMARY SCHOOL WOULD FREAK OUT AT HOW IGNORANT OF HISTORY AND SCIENCE MANY ADULTS CAN BE…

PLEASE, TO SOME OF YOU, GO BACK TO SCHOOLS AND STOP READING PSEUDO -SCIENCE BOOKS. THERE ARE HUNDRED OF THOUSANDS OF RESEARCHERS OUT THERE DOING SOME SERIOUS AND IMPRESSIVE WORK…

  25. SIR EURO says:

ALSO NOTICE THAT MOST OF THE MODERN SCIENTIFIC TERMINOLOGY IN NORDIC LANGUAGES ( EXCEPT IN ICELAND BECAUSE THEY TRY TO CREATE TERMS IN THEIR LANGUAGE AND THAT IS WHY THEY HAVE SUCH A MESS AT HIGH EDUCATION LEVELS) CAME DIRECTLY FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN CIVILIZATIONS OF GREECE AND ROME. THEIR INFLUENCE IS STILL ALIVE TODAY.

DO YOU KNOW WHY? BECAUSE MUCH OF THIS CONCEPTS AND IDEAS DID JUST NOT EXIST IN A WORLD THAT WAS WAY TOO UNDEVELOPED AND PRIMITIVE AND MOST OF IT WAS NORTH OF THE ALPS.

NOTHING IN HUMAN HISTORY IS COMPARABLE WITH THE MEDITERRANEAN REVOLUTION OF KNOWLEDGE. WHICH IS THE GROUND FOR OUR MODERN CIVILIZATION AND SCIENCE.

AND NOW, IF YOU WANT TO FORM A UNION OF NORDIC COUNTRIES, JUST THINK THAT THE BRITISH ISLES, HISTORICALLY ARE MORE CELTIC AND ROMAN THAN ANY OTHER THING.

FOR PEOPLE WITH VISUAL PROBLEMS IT IS NOT DISTURBING, BUT A GREAT HELP. YOU DON´T HAVE ANY PROBLEM IN READING MY TEXTS. AND THAT IS THE IMPORTANT THING. THAT YOU CAN READ AND UNDERSTAND.

YOU THINK THAT CAPS. IS A DISTURBING THING JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE IDEA THAT ON THE INTERNET CAPS IS LIKE SHOUTING. BUT THAT IS ONLY YOUR PERCEPTION. WORDS HERE ARE SILENCE. THERE IS NO VOLUME. YOU CAN TAKE IT AS YOU WONT. BUT WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT IS THAT YOU CAN READ, UNDERSTAND AND POST COMMENTS THAT GIVE A LOGIC RESPONSE IN THE WAY OF A SOLUTION OF CONTINUATION, NOT JUST A TERMINATIVE COMMENT ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE LETTERS. THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE POSTED ARTICLE, NOR WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE IDEAS EXPOSED HERE.

  27. Bromley86 says:

    >YOU THINK THAT CAPS. IS A DISTURBING THING JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE THE IDEA THAT ON THE INTERNET CAPS IS LIKE SHOUTING. BUT THAT IS ONLY YOUR PERCEPTION.

It’s not just that. Certainly speaking for myself, it’s harder to read all caps text, just as it’s harder to read unpunctuated text or block text without returns or paragraphs.

SIR NEURO wrote :”NOTHING IN HUMAN HISTORY IS COMPARABLE WITH THE MEDITERRANEAN REVOLUTION OF KNOWLEDGE. Dear Sir Neuro, i really doubt that the visual one is your only and real problem : you spit out sentences like you are God on earth, your comments are more or less always offensive toward the community where you are guest, whatever the topic of the conversation is, and boardeline racist, as someone pointed out. A professional would call it pathological inferiority complex (it comes from latin, you know…), i call it low quality of life and being a sad, a very sad and lonely person.I lived in Iceland for years and never had the experiences that you claim to have had, i have icelandic wife and children, good icelandic friends and coworkers, i met just few assh****, as there are everywhere in the world, even in Spain and Swiss, that in your eyes are paradise on earth(why don’t you move there?).You should be very happy that the same icelandic people, that you always make fun and complain of, still give you the opportunity and previledge to post your hate rubbish in this forum.

  29. densou says:

Rome’s priests (catholics!?) must be not married, but they can waste own money into alcohol, hookers, etc.. instead of giving that amount to the poors.

Multi-culturalism. I am in favour, although not me or anyone of my fellowmen are involved. [we just deserve to die] :) Takk

  30. md says:

Why not just create a one-world government slave state and be done with it already? Multiculturalism has a dark side, even among the Nordic Nations. Is this a genuine movement that the people want? Or is it being foisted upon them by those with ulterior motives?

And by the way, the 100 most commonly used words in the English language are all of Germanic origin. Of the 1000 most common words, 83% are of Germanic origin. Most English words are indeed derived from Latin, but that doesn’t mean they’re the foundation of the language. The English language is a Germanic language to its core. It just so happens that it has borrowed many Latin words over the centuries, but that doesn’t mean they’re used as frequently as Germanic words. Nothing against Latin, but just don’t misrepresent the facts.

  31. Rachelle says:

I just found an interesting discussion here, some people teasing here i have been noticed. LOL, but while i was enjoying researching for some Nordic nation i am also happy to meet some commenter on this post. Some of them are emotionally but its ok. :)
