Iceland places top on the new World Economic Forum ranking of nations by gender equality. Former pole sitter, Norway is pushed into third. With Finland in second and Sweden in fourth, it is a strong showing from the Nordic countries.
The list ranks 134 countries and is intended to measure how nations split responsibility and opportunity between the sexes. Iceland’s rise on the list can partly be attributed to education and women’s participation in politics. The most important example being that the ratio of women in parliament has increased from 33 to 43 percent since the last rankings were made.
A statement from the Innovation Centre of Iceland said that Iceland leads the world in women’s participation in politics; but that measured purely on parity of wages between the sexes, Iceland ranks a mere 50th on the list. Iceland is only 46th on the list when it comes to women at the head of large companies, Visir.is reports.

How a woman can be equal to a man? Or all people to be equal? Biologically simply this could not be.
@Balkanson – I think this is more about mentality than biology. It is as simple as that men and women cooperate, and we like that way.
As a business owner, I’ve found women can easily be just as driven and intelligent as men. In fact, I’ve hired more women in my firm than men recently and I’m very happy with company productivity.
” that measured purely on parity of wages between the sexes, Iceland ranks a mere 50th on the list. ”
That is because women dont like to spend as much time in workplace as men. Most prefer part-time work and that is why their wages show as lower.
( This is general and not just to Iceland .)
Fisy – If that reason is “general and not just to Iceland”, then why would that reason push Iceland lower down a list relative to other countries?
“That is because women dont like to spend as much time in workplace as men. Most prefer part-time work and that is why their wages show as lower.”
I WOULDN´T SAY THEY DON´T LIKE. I WOULD SAY THEY CANNOT. MOST OF WOMEN IN WESTERN COUNTRIES HAVE TO DO MOST OF THE HOUSE WORK AT HOME. COOKING, CLEANING, TAKING CARE OF CHILDREN AND THE LIKE. AND JUST THINK ABOUT THE MANY DIVORCED WOMEN AND SINGLE MOMS WE HAVE IN WESTERN COUNTRIES.
WOMEN IN WESTERN COUNTRIES OFTEN WORK THE DOUBLE BECAUSE MOST OF COUPLES DON´T SHARE MANY OF THE HOME TASKS. SPECIALLY WHEN WE TALK ABOUT DIVORCED COUPLES. THE MAN SENDS THE MONEY AND GO SOME DAYS A MONTH TO SEE THE KIDS, AND THAT´S ALL. WOMEN DO GENERALLY HAVE MOST OF THE RESPONSIBILITY OF TAKING CARE OF THE CHILDREN AND THE HOME TASKS…
@EURO
I doubt men in other regions do more of the homework.
I have done all the homework this week, as my wife is on holiday in Africa… ;-)
woah, what a far vacation ! I hope she’s going through a safe holiday ;)
OYSTEN: I doubt men in other regions do more of the homework.

NO, THEY DON’T, BUT THEIR WOMEN STAY AT HOME MOST OF THE YEAR. SO THEY DONT HAVE TO WORK 40 HOURS A WEEK AT THE COMPANY AND THEN 20 AT HOME.
YOU ARE A CLEANING HERO! SUCH A MODEL OF SCANDINAVIAN RATIONALITY ! I SHOULD CALL YOU MR. PROPER, HAVE DONE ALL THE HOMEWORK THIS WEEK, BUT, ONLY THIS WEEK? WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER WEEKS?
THE TRUTH IS THAT EUROPEAN WOMEN DO MOST OF THE HOME CLEANING AND CHILD CARE, MOST OF THE TIMES. THAT ARE JUST STATISTICS. GO OUT PARTYING, 60% MEN YOU FIND ARE MARRIED, BUT BY THE OTHER HAND 75% OF WOMEN ARE SINGLE OR DIVORCED…. HAHAAHA, SO WHAT ARE THE WIFES DOING AT HOME WHILE THEIR HUSBANDS ARE AT THE BARS??
EVEN MUSLIM WOMEN ARE MORE LUCKY IN THAT, AS MUSLIMS DON´T DRINK ALCOHOL AND STAY AT HOME WATCHING TV.
OLD EUROPE, SO PERFECT AND SO WRONG. TRYING TO TEACH EVERYONE LESSONS THAT HAS TO LEARN FIRST.
THE RIGHT AND RESPONSIBLE POSITION IS TO BE AWAKE TO RECOGNIZE WHAT IS WRONG AND FIX IT. BUT SAYING THAT EVERYTHING IS SO FINE…ALL THE TIME…THAT IS SO BAD
@Densou
Absoulute – they were 5 women visiting Marrakesh for a week. I picked her up at airport today – first check seemed OK ;-).
She said the holiday was fantastic, very friendly and helpful people, fantastic food. They also visited homes (berber families/farmers) – which make them come closer to reality that traditional charter travels.
@Euro – my wife is a good mother for our kids, and we cooperate to make a good life for us all and to those who stay us close. The statistics you showed has nothing to do with our life.
By the way – it is fathers day today…
Interesting.
Reminds me why i love working from home. I can be a stay at home girl, enjoy looking after my home and garden or working in my office.
