Iceland’s only free-to-air commercial television station will become a paid subscription channel from the middle of November, according to a press release from Skjar Media, which owns the channel.
Subscriptions to the channel, whose slogan today changed from ‘Always Free’ to ‘Almost Free’, will cost ISK 2,200 per month and payment will start to be collected from the 1st December.
From the middle of November, the only terrestrial television station will be the state-run RUV service.

is this in anyway avoidable? Can we stop recieving Skjareinn?
Absolutely yes. The signal will be scrambled for those who choose not to pay.

How about when hell freezes over!
I am so lucky I have Kapalvæðing!!!!
An other blow…wanting us to pay to watch Pipsi music the whole day ,go to hell skjar,Ruv and even stoð 2.We already have no choice in paying Ruv every year starting 13h ends at 1h00.How can this come unbeleiveable? This should not happen in a free country like Iceland. In the poorest countries around the globe.they have many tv. stations for free.I hope not one day they would come to our homes and asks to pay ..Strax.. to watch the News…am lucky that i understand 4 other languages so i can watch for free (Dish internet) .What about our people who does not understand other language? They are undermining the Icelandic language inside iceland.
SAAAAAAAAAAd
thanks for publication
2,200 ISK monthly ? Neither our crappy public broadcaster has such a (paid yearly) expensive bill :S
The title of the article sounds a little bit contradictory, acctually alot contradictory.
“Icelanders to pay for enjoying free TV”
How can you pay for something free? shouldn’t it be more something more realistic like:
“NO MORE free TV in Iceland”
Or are we trying to follow this guy that clearly works for the goberment intersts that came out yesterday with an article, recomending the media to make more possitive news, so we poor Icelanders don’t get so depressed?
Pfft, brilliant. I’ll be saving money and no longer brainlessly watching ****ty reality TV imports. Good riddance!
Adopt the euro and you’ll get a free Italian housewife strippers channel.
The funny thing is that plenty of people will pay to watch this dumbed-down network as they do for the other channels. I always find interesting how you can “judge” a nation by its media, especially the TV.
nice said, Aggi :)) Now, according to our medias, you are aware of not trustworthy people (us), beware of them! ;)
In a country where TV channels are just garbage why to have one more free channel? You have INTERNET and you can see there more channels for free, but another problem !!!It’s start to be more expensive and u have limit per month 10/20/70 Gb or 120 Gb/SO…the best solution is not to watch TV.AND I DON’T SEE THE REASON WHY TO PAY TAXES FOR TV IF WE DON’T HAVE ACCESS TO WATCH TV.How long this stupid people from parliament will continue to put taxes and offer nothing. The life it is like it is so..guys let’s try to emigrate everybody from this big s..t!
The press will start to close more and more your mouth if you try to say something,On TV just forget it because u don’t have something to watch so throw it away,on radio..always the same thing just..will be a country with handicaps, without money and payments to Icesave and so on.What remains to do???
Don’t forget to stop publish what i’m writing !Because will be more and more people against you, against this freedom to talk, freedom for life!
So “Your comment is awaiting moderation.” Be carefully what you write and watch! somebody will try to close your mouth!!!
