Norway awards Barack Obama Nobel Peace Prize

obamaIt was announced earlier this afternoon in the Norwegian capital, Oslo that this year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to US President Barack Obama.

The head of the Nobel Committee is Norwegian Thorbjorn Jagland, the newly elected head of the European Council. When asked why the award went to Obama, he told the BBC: “”It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve. It is a clear signal that we want to advocate the same as he has done.”

The newly elected President is praised for adopting a peaceful and reconciliatory tone on the global stage and the Nobel Committee hopes the recognition will help him in bringing peace to troubled regions, including Israel, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Meanwhile, peace campaigners around the world, including in all the Nordic countries, criticised the decision. They argue that vastly increasing troop numbers in Afghanistan and ‘seriously thinking about’ withdrawing from Iraq should not qualify a President for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Moderate voices among the critics, including Swedish Social Democrat press spokesman Urban Ahlin, contest that Obama could make a good Nobel Peace Prize candidate, but that this year is too early to tell. “I’d like to have seen Obama get the peace prize in a few years when he can show the results of his efforts. Now is too early,” he told The Local.

The winner of the Nobel Prize receives a gold medal, a diploma and SEK 10 million. The Peace Prize is the only Nobel Prize not awarded in Sweden. Instead it is decided by a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament. Alfred Nobel felt the Peace Prize would be more neutral if awarded by Norway, because at the time of his death Norway and Sweden were still in union, but Sweden controlled all foreign policy.

The award ceremony takes place on 10th December each year, which is the anniversary of Nobel’s death.

I knew when Obama was able to get a Boston cop and Harvard professor to sit down for a beer and peanuts, that the Nobel Prize was soon to follow.

  2. Timotheus says:

He lost the Olympics but still snagged a gold medal. Nice bling.

And hello all Vikings – here is a proclamation from Obama to us a couple of days ago!

I believe that it would have been best if the Nobel Committee had waited a few years to assess the impact of President Obama’s peace initiatives before giving him the prize.

  5. densou says:

Herregud! That explains everything :°D The Committee was lucky to have put him in the nominees list back then (Remember: the deadline was just after 2 weeks he became -officially in charge- president)

  6. Chris R says:

    An interesting turn of events.

He has done a lot to promote world peace, rid the world of nuclear weapons and to combat global warming. I for one, am happy for news. Now if he would only end Bush’s wars.

  7. Jason says:

Personally I think its his symbolic election that got him this nomination. Do you think he has accomplished enough during his nine months in office to deserve this prize? VOTE here >>> http://www.dipoll.com/index.php?poll_id=527

This is great news. I am very happy that he won. It is especially fun reading all the haters comments.

    You right man!
The only problem – what the world will be able to award him with when he really do something – like managing to train his dog to follow “Sit” command? :-)
we really should start thinking about it as Nobel Prize won’t be enough. Gold statue of him next to the Liberty?

    What a joke.
And double joke is that the Nobel Prize committee chairman is elected to be general Secretary of the ComParty… oops European Council.

PS. I think these self-pleasing games of modern political playboys will end up in real trouble.

  11. Chris Brown says:

All you guys do is complain and bitch about Obama this and Obama that, what has he done to you that Bush didn’t start, Hello wasn’t Bush the one that started the war ? Or wasn’t he the reason Gas went sky high, also he’s the reason we lost our jobs and our houses are in foreclosure since Obama came in office I was able to afford school, and make something out of my self you people that talk all this nonsense about one’s accomplishments are simply selfish ignorant morons who have nothing better to do but throw your tea partys and juice up prejudice if he had been a White man you would be happy and cheering but because he is black you are talking **** and spreading nothing but hate if you even dare claim to be a christian I cast your sorry asses to hell. Because of Obama your un-employed asses are able to log online and talk and spread this hate, I mean think about all the drama in florida with everything going on Republicans did this to our Country not Obama and if you believe everything the press says you are a stupid ****, Wake up people wake the hell up.

And yes I’m proud to be BLACK

  12. The question is: Does Obama deserves The Nobel Peace Prize more then Ghandi? Vote Now! Express yourself.

Here’s a funny article that would probably explain his win as well as anything, however unlikely:

Why not donate the 1.4 mil for social change? Create a school for social change. A lot of us work in the ghetto or work with ghetto people. We like our jobs and like our clients. We have a greater number of underserved families than we ever had in the past. Getting your hands dirty with them is the only way to make changes Vs. relying on promises. I would gladly step in line for the money.
I work with all ethnic groups, predominately African American. I am white and I create my own personal debt trying to help them out with money for a doctor’s visit, or pay for their prescriptions, buy them groceries. I even watched their kids for them so they could go to classes at the local college so they could qualify for a job. I cannot save the world, although I wish more people would help because our government is more worried about politics and promises. Can the Norwegian Parliamant recent the vote? Here is why….”I promise to make worldwide changes in humanity and promise to have a great impact on social change.” I want to throw my name in the hat…I already have proof I am making social changes in our state. It is all about rolling your sleeves up, getting dirty, sweating, and providing the help needed. It does not always have to be about the money to do it…whereas, money will help sustain the efforts to make it more broad. Do I have any voters out there for me?

  15. Jim says:

I know a physics doctoral candidate who has just started his research career. Perhaps he could be awarded a Nobel Prize for his expected contributions to physics in the coming years…

  16. Aggi says:

this is very premature!! Indeed he has promise a lot but done almost nothing. maybe the price should be call, nobel price for promising peace.

He is incrementing troop presence in their wars, following similar tactics as Bush and accomplishing his boss and friends agendas.

It is a disgrace in away to give a tittle like that in this matter therefore the nobel price loses it credibility.

Another victory in the agenda of diminishing certain hopes.

  17. Aggi says:

Chris Brown, you are falling in the race tactic, look up comments by many African Americans that dont agree with Obamas policies.
You should check the Obama Deception, also look at some lectures by Professor Griff or some of the shows in Occult Science Radio.

“Listen to everybody, believe nobody, until you can prove it in your OWN research”

  18. ThinkAboutIt says:

Just another example of how truly meaningless the Nobel Prizes are. Serious, are these people trying to destroy whatever creditability the prize might have once had just so they can rub elbows with other elitist.

  19. Tim66n says:

No I do not thing he deserves this particular prize. However, I do think he may be deserving of “Time Magazines, Man of the Year”

  20. SIR EURO says:

AND WHO IS GOING TO GIVE THE NOBEL PRICE OF PEACE TO NORWAY AND ITS HYPOCRIT SOCIETY? BECAUSE THEY HAVE ONLY A POPULATION OF FEW MILLIONS, BUT THEY ARE THE 7TH PRODUCED OF WAR WEAPONS IN THE WORLD!!! NORWEGIAN WEAPON AND WAR INDUSTRY IS A MAIN SOURCE OF INCOME FOR THE COUNTRY… BUT HEY, THEM THEY GO GIVING PEACE MEDALS HERE AND THERE… IF I WAS NORWEGIAN AND HAD SOME HUMAN SENSE I WOULD VOMIT AT THE PARLIAMENTS DOORS…

BUT AS NORWEGIANS ARE GOOD VIKINGS, A “NORDIC” MODEL OF WHAT IS TO BE THE PERFECT SOCIETY, THEY WONT COMPLAIN OR DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT AT ALL…

UNTIL THE **** FINISHES TO ROTEN THEIR OWN COUNTRY, JUST THE SAME THAT HAPPENED TO ICELANDERS…

THIS IS WHAT I CALL THE SCANDINAVIAN SYNDROME, THEY USE TO THINK THEIR “NORDIC” SOCIETIES TO BE MODELS FOR DEMOCRACY, BUT THEIR COUNTRIES ARE FULL OF THE SAME CORRUPT AND DISHONEST POLITICIANS YOU CAN FIND ANYWHERE ELSE…

PRODUCING BOMBS AND WAR MATERIAL AND THEN GIVING NOBEL PRIZES OF PEACE… DONT THEY FEEL ANY SHAME??

  21. SIR EURO says:

THIS IS AND EXAMPLE OF THE TRUTH THE NORWEGIAN GOVERNMENT IS TRYING TO HIDE AT ALL COSTS. THE NOBEL PRICE OF PEACE, AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL THEATERS THEY MAKE UP,,, ALL LIES TO TRY TO CONVINCE THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY…

    “Norwegian rules for arms exports
In its efforts to promote development and peace, Norway wishes to head the field, and is a frontrunner in international initiatives for control of the arms trade, but this desire is not reflected in Norwegian legislation, production and export policies.
In its practices and legislation, there are several weaknesses causing Norway to fall short of the standards the country claims to promote internationally, and these include, for example, that we have no assurance that Norwegian-made firearms and ammunition will not end up among parties involved in wars, or not be used in actions that violate human rights. It will be particularly important to achieve increased openness with regard to Norwegian arms exports, better identification of Norwegian-made firearms and an obligatory end-user statement for purchasers of Norwegian firearms.”

  22. SIR EURO says:

NORWAY PRODUCES HEAVY WATER, AND SELL IT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION.

” Heavy water is the key to one type of reactor in which plutonium can be bred from natural uranium. In addition, a source of deuterium is essential for the production of tritium and 6LiD, two ingredients of thermonuclear weapons. A nation seeking large quantities of heavy water probably wishes to use the material to moderate a reactor, and may be planning to produce plutonium.

Heavy water is produced in Argentina, Canada, India, and Norway. Presumably, all five declared nuclear weapons states can produce the material. The first commer-cial heavy water plant was the Norsk Hydro facility in Norway (built 1934, capacity 12 metric metric tons per year); this is the plant which was attacked by the Allies to deny heavy water to Germany. As stated above, the largest plant, is the Bruce Plant in Canada (1979; 700 metric tons/year). India’s apparent capacity is very high, but its program has been troubled. Accidents and shutdowns have led to effective limitations on production.”

IT SEEMS THAT THE NORWEGIAN NATION HAS MANY DIRTY SECRETS…

  23. Jill Suzuki says:

Yes-Barack Obama most definitely deserves the Nobel Peace Prize- especially after the warmonger George Bush! Obama has finally opened the doors for peace and goodwill. I’m proud to say I live in the country just north of Obama!

  24. suman says:

hey i m not favoring that noble prize goes to US President Barrack Obama…..Take a glance in the history of noble…Jane Akhatar nominated for 91 times for this award, someone got after his death and much more…………….Than how such a great prize can given to a person who takes less than 9 month, who only started his many plans but result yet to get…..

  25. Folke Dubell says:

For sure Barack Obama is worthy of the Price. But the Norwegian Price Committee has embarassed him. The Price came prematurely. They could at least have waited until next year. The idea that they want to encourage his policies is understandable but normally you receive a reward after you have done something good. Not before! The idea is good, the timing is wrong!

  26. Øystein, Norway says:

The reaction from Russia/Medvedev sounds really good, as they say it is an inspiration and welcome it! Then the nomination was a perfect timing.

  27. Marc says:

I read the news about Mr. Obama Nobel price in newspaper. On the same page there was a news that US Air force is testing a new 13.500 kg bomb. Is that ironic or it is ironic?

  28. Tom Falvo says:

I agree with those who think that its simply too early to determine whether or not Obama has actually accomplished anything deemed worthy of the honor of the Nobel Peace Prize. Personally, I think that one has to accomplish something TRULY outstanding for the Nobel Committee to even consider bestowing any kind of honor on them.

  29. Sean says:

I find it incredible that the Repug ditto-heads are trolling on this site too after trolling all over the liberal US sites spreading their ugly rhetoric.
Just recently almost all Europe was disgusted by the US’s actions over seas; engaging in Wars, almost collapsing the entire World Economy (Thanks to Dubya and his Cronies)and now it’s being commended for constructively engaging other Nations diplomatically and still the so called “Patriots” are calling it Socialism.
Obama inhereted all this mess and his done tremendously well in the nine months he’s been in the job, why aren’t you talking about the Economy and how the stock Market has bounced back, no?
I don’t believe the NPP was awarded because he’s president but rather his body of work merited the recognition. He’s been working on the Nuclear proliferation issue since he was in the Senate, justice and Peace. I’m of the opinion though that we’ve been lucky to have an Intelligent administration at this defining moment in History with China’s impending influence almost around the corner, we need to prepare our fellow citizens to be able to compete in a global market.I’ve seen alot of MBA graduates move to China for employment and this is a growing trend not just an isolated incident. All these Teabaggers and Birthers don’t realise what’s at stake perhaps they have their heads burried in the sand.
The POTUS made Education one of his number 1 priorities and for the US to stay relevant we need intelligent and smart folks at the helm, some of the policies that are being taken today may not bear fruit tomorrow but the seeds have been planted and if you want to see what the POTUS has done since taking office please look at the government website and then start runnig your uninformed mouths.
This is the most open administration in US history if you want to know what policies the goverment’s taking in any particular field just look it up after all it’s only a click away. I hope the repugs stay on their fauxlies blogs and stop spreading their hate all over the world but am pretty sure you already new that, didn’t you?
And NO am not in anyway affiliated with China whatsoever I’m just another citizen who appreciates intelligence and understands that these are different sets of challenges we are confrontend with today.

Ps. I think the NPP was deservedly for his body of work, but in haste. And I love Iceland too!!

  30. Morris Judkins says:

Isn’t this just a preemptive decision by the Nobel committee under the guise of greater powers to ensure that Obama actually does something to merit the award? Seems to me that Obama now cannot invade Iran etc… The US president is essentially the world’s leading actor and now he has more of a script to follow

  31. blahbleh says:

I think this was ill thought, though with a good intentions.

I have the highes regards towards Obama, but this is so wrong on so many levels it isn’t even funny.

This will do nothing else but belittle both Obama and the Nobel prize, and those who got it before him, I’m sorry to say.

  32. Christine says:

I think Obama deserve this prise, he brought peace and did how american people wanted, he is a great president, those who doesn’t agree are just gelous.

  33. American says:

Anyone who thinks this is not ridiculous needs to relocate their brain. Or perhaps it is due to the neverending polarizing propaganda that the Obama-people are absolutely against everything that the old puppet leader did, but wholeheartedly support all actions of this new puppet – although they are exactly the same. How embarassing.

The most dreadful thing Obama has done is to show us how irrational people can become due to extreme bias..and that cult-like worship can easily be purchased through a relatively short (but pervasive) media campaign. What’s most disturbing is to see how his beloved followers worship him despite being lied to with shocking regularity. Welcome to the freaky reign of Bush III – The Usurper.

  34. Hayley says:

i admire Barack Obama because he is very charismatic and he is liberal minded.

  35. OMG says:

    OMG!!!
obama??! what the hell dos he need a proze like this?!
    he didnt do anything!!!
being “charismatic” is no reason to get a prize like this.
other canidates put there lifes on the line for real peace! this is the dumbest act ever made!!!
    we are ashamed!!!

  36. Aggi says:

Something to keep in mind, the prize is mostly given to Communist or Totalitarian Socialist.

  37. Alexander E. says:

    Hayley said:

You can kiss the stairs he walked, worship his house in Chicago and admire his liberal mind (whatever it means). You even might worship him as Christ, Buddha and Muhammad all together. I really don’t mind.
But tell me what all this BS has to do with Nobel prize?

Just a decade ago – after other charismatic man with liberal mind crewed everything possible – when health system was totally ruined by perestroika I needed a surgery. By that time people had to bring to the hospital everything with them – including bed lining and food. I just made a deal with the doctor – he did his best and I paid cash for the whole team. But even the doctor (he didn’t get salary for the last three months) declined my money at first. He said “Money BEFORE I do my job is a bribe. Money AFTER my job done – reward”.

So if I were Obama (thanks god I’m not) – I would decline this prize and let few political morons in Norway to deal with the mess they created.

  38. Tim66n says:

    >>So if I were Obama (thanks god I’m not) – I would decline this prize and let few political morons in Norway to deal with the mess they created.

When I read that idea, the simple elegance of it struck me. That would truely be a case of him telling the world “judge me when I am done.” A man of simple integrety can often make a huge impact on others.

This is a interesting idea, he is going to have to find a really good reason to invade Iran, or someone to do it for him, and then join in, Israel may be.

In my mind Obama has done nothing to deserve this,
he is just a puppet like many previous presidents, he may be given the honor for something brilliant and wonderful at some point in the future but nothing he does is actually his idea,
he just does what he is told,
    i like Obama,
it would be great if Obama had some real power and could do what he wants to do,
but thats just not how it works.

  40. Unbelievable! says:

Yeah right,he should also get Grammy, Oscar and Miss World title.
Next time they should nominate Paris Hilton-she’s charismatic too.

  41. Jim says:

“Congratulations, Paris, you’ve won the Nobel Peace Prize.”
    “Cool. Piece of what?”

  42. Øystein, Norway says:

Cool 2 – “You’ve won the Nobel Piece, Paris”

  43. BADB***H says:

THE WAY I SEE IT IS LIKE PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID….. HE WUZ UNAWARE THAT HE WUZ NOMINATED WHICH MEANS THERE IS NO REASON FOR N E BODY TA BE SELLIN OUT ON HIM LIKE DAT. I MEAN WATEVA U SAY DONT MATTA N E WAY CUZ HE STILL GON B DA FREAKING PRESIDENT FOR THA NEXT FOUR YEARS MAYBE EVEN EIGHT. SO STOP ALL DA COMPLAININ. U MAU BE RIGHT THEIR DECISION MAY HAVE BEEN PREMATURE BUT WHO DA HELL CARES IT AIN YALL D**M PRIZE TA GIVE AWAY SO LET DEM DO WAT DEY WANT.
