>>I DON´T KNOW WHAT DOES THE EDITOR OF THIS ICENEWS TRY TO SAY WITH THIS ARTICLE…

Icenews is simply translating news from our good friend David at mbl.

Also I do not see in the article where it says that the computers are new. Again it simply states that 92% have a computer of some sort at home.

IS SUCH DATA RELIABLE? I MUST BE TEACHING IN A POOR NEIGHBORHOOD, BECAUSE ALL OF MY STUDENTS ARE ABOVE 18 AND ONLY 1/3 OF THEM OWNS A LAP TOP. THE REST USE MOSTLY OBSOLETE COMPUTERS THEY HAVE AT HOME, COMPUTERS THAT MANY OF THE TIMES AREN'T GOOD ENOUGH FOR THE KIND OF PROGRAMS, E-LEARNING THEY NEED TO DO. AND WHAT IS WORSE, THEY HAVE TO SHARE IT WITH THE REST OF THE FAMILY.

IF YOU COULD SEE THE COMPUTERS THAT ARE IN THE SCHOOL WHERE I TEACH. THEY ARE ALL OLDER THAN 5 YEARS. Y WOULD SAY THAT ONLY A 25% OF THEM WORKS WELL, BUT THE REST ARE JUST CRAP THAT ARE NOT EVEN WORTHY TO BE USED.

NOW, THE CUTTINGS IN EDUCATION IN ICELAND IS ABOUT 0 KRONURS TO BUY COMPUTERS AND RELATED. 0 KRS !!!! THERE IS NOT A SINGLE SCHOOL IN ICELAND THAT CAN BUY A COMPUTER NOW, UNLESS THEY HAVE MANAGED TO DO IT BY SACRIFIYING OTHER THINGS LIKE TAKING OFF MOST OF THE EDUCATIONAL OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES, ETC...

SO I THINK THIS ARTICLE SHOWS A VERY BAD INTERPRETATION OF REALITY. THE SITUATION IS FAR WORSE. CONSIDERING THAT EVEN IN TIMES OF CRISIS MOST OF THE EU COUNTRIES HAVE INCREASED THEIR INVESTMENT IN EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH.

FOR EXAMPLE 400.000 LAP-TOPS HAVE BEEN BOUGHT BY THE SPANISH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION TO SUPLY HIGH SCHOOL AND SCHOOL STUDENTS. ANOTHER GREAT INVESTMENT HAVE BEEN DONE IN COMMUNICATION AND EDUCATION TECHNOLOGIES, E-LEARNING, VIRTUAL EDUCATIONAL CONTEXTS. ETC...

IN EU MASTERS PROGRAMMS IN E-LEARNING, INFORMATION SOCIETY, AND UNIVERSITY ACCREDITED PROGRAMS OFFERED ON-LINE HAVE DUPLICATED!!!

I DON´T KNOW WHAT DOES THE EDITOR OF THIS ICENEWS TRY TO SAY WITH THIS ARTICLE... IT SEEMS THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE STILL A HARD TIME TRYING TO MOVE ON WITH THE NEW REALITY OF THIS COUNTRY. MANY STILL HANG ON ROMANTIC MEMORIES OF A SOCIETY THAT IS NOT ANYMORE WHAT IT WAS...

I THINK IT IS MUCH BETTER TO FACE REALITY AND STOP TRYING TO MASK IT. WE NEED TO FACE REALITY, RECOGNIZE WHAT ARE THE REAL NEEDS AND TRY TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT...

To Jim:

>>>>Are the rumours true that Gordon Brown is going to cut off Iceland’s Internet access if it doesn’t agree to repay Icesave?

That will do it, we give up! We will pay everything, just don't cut off our Internet access, please... :-)
