Iceland top OECD education spender, new report reveals

MRIceland’s spending on education amounted to 8 percent of GDP in 2006, putting the country in the top spot for OECD countries spending most on education. The OECT average was 6.1 percent and the global average was 5.7 percent.

The figures come from the newly-released “Education at a Glance 2009, OECD Indicators”. The publication includes comprehensive information on education services in all 30 OECD countries, plus Brazil, Chile, Estonia, Israel, Russia and Slovenia, MBL.is reports. Figures cited are mostly from the 2006-2007 school year. The majority of figures for Iceland were sourced from Statistics Iceland.

Funding for educational institutions as a proportion of national production has been unchanged in Iceland since 2003 when funding for preschools was first included in the figures. 18.1 percent of government spending in Iceland went to education in 2006, compared to an OECD average of 13.3 percent.

WHAT IS THIS ARTICLE ABOUT?? I HAVE BEEN A SCHOOL TEACHER AND A PROFESSOR IN ICELAND FOR MANY YEARS. NOW LET ME TELL YOU THAT IT IS A REAL SCANDAL GOING ON IN THE ELEMENTAL SCHOOLS ( RULED BY OPPORTUNISTIC AND MOST OF THE TIMES LOW EDUCATED LITTLE TOWN POLITICIANS) THEY HAVE BEEN THROWING OUT LOTS OF TEACHERS. MANY TEACHERS HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS ALL AROUND THE COUNTRIES. THE SPENDING IN SPECIAL EDUCATION HAS BEEN DRAMATICALLY REDUCED TO A 10% OF WHAT IT WAS TWO YEARS AGO. THE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES OFFERED TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES IN ICELANDIC SCHOOLS IS ONE OF THE WORST IN EUROPE. COMPUTERS IN MANY OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS ARE SO OLD AND STUDENTS COMPLAIN ABOUT IT BECAUSE THEY DON´T WORK MOST OF THE TIMES. SPENDING IN EDUCATION HAVE BEEN REDUCED TO SOMETHING CLOSE TO 0KR. FOR EXAMPLE, I DON´T EVEN TRY TO BUY SOME OF THE BOOKS AND THINGS I NEED TO TEACH BECAUSE THERE IS SIMPLY NO MONEY FOR IT. SO I HAVE TO BUY THINGS PAID OFF MY POCKET. MORE THAN THE HALF OF STUDENTS HAVE PROBLEMS FOR BUYING SCHOOL MATERIALS, THAT IS SOMETHING WE CAN ALSO SEE ON THE NEWS AND TEACHERS SEE EVERYDAY. IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO TEACH WITHOUT THE NECESSARY MATERIALS, OBSOLETE OLD COMPUTERS, STUDENTS WITHOUT BOOKS AND SO ON…

SO GIVE ME A BREAK, THIS ARTICLE IS JUST TALKING CRAP!!

AND I AM ALSO A PHD STUDENT AND JUST GO AND CHECK WHAT IS GOING ON AT THE UNIVERSITIES NOW. PLEASE, DON´T COME UP WITH THIS CRAP TALKING ABOUT HOW THINGS WHERE HERE 3-4 YEARS AGO, WE WANT TO KNOW ABOUT HOW THEY ARE NOW!! AFRONT REALITY AS IT IS AND FIND SOLUTION.

WHY IS THIS ICENEWS THING TRYING TO MAKE US LIVE ON DREAMS AND MEMORIES??
