A week ago, a well known dangerous criminal, Hosmany Ramos from Brazil, was on his way from Norway to Canada when he was stopped in Keflavik, Iceland by police. He was found travelling on a false passport, which was his brother’s. Ramos has been sitting in a local prison in Reykjavik since his arrest.
The Brazilian Secretary of National Justice, Romeu Tuma Junior, has now said he is willing to travel to Iceland personally to discuss bringing Ramos back home to Brazil. There are Icelandic prisoners held in Brazilian prisons at the moment which would play into any potential trade of prisoners, because no formal extradition agreement exists between Brazil and Iceland, according to Frettabladid.
Ramos was charged almost 30 years ago for murdering his private pilot, as well as for burglary and smuggling. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. He escaped Brazil during a Christmas leave last year and has never returned.
Ramos told Icelandic Stod2 (Channel 2) that his life is threatened in Brazil and would like to apply for political asylum in Iceland. He claims that prison life in Iceland is like a 4-star hotel. The fate of Ramos has not been decided yet.

This Dr. was very abble on his job on his working time. He is very inteligent. In the brazilian jail he got no chance of nothing. Here they place 100 persons on the space of 15. I prison you have to fight for your life, like an animal.Prisons full of drugs and violence. There is no way worry about recovering the persons and the only worry to keep the prisioners jailed like animals. The judges that send prisioners to prison should stay there a 10 days time so they can feel the aurea of the place.
Would be a christian act to keep Mr. Ramos on your prison and try to bring your citizens home. In brazil any criminal pays a month on a day if you compare to your prison condition. Door of the hell.

Would be an great act of mercy to keep Mr. Ramos at the prison on your country. Barzil is pack of criminals, from the top to the botton, and Nr. Ramos from what he has suffered already doing more that 20 years on a terrible condition prisons, bring the brazilian politicians on prison, they have robbed our education and safety and also the poor children milk.
Italian jails/prisons are overcrowded as well (more than 60,000 people despite a total capacity of approx 40,000). But that violates “human rights convention”, however, we have had that situation for decades and nobody cares.

Why? If Mr Ramos should be in prison in Brazil, then he should be sent to Brazil. The fact that there are Icelanders in prison in Brazil is irrelevant.
In any case “Every prison in Iceland is overcrowded and if a new prison is not built soon, or Litla-Hraun Penitentiary enlarged, the situation will become dire, according to mbl.is” (Daily News From Iceland, 27 July).
So the Brazilians will be doing Iceland a favour if they keep their prisoner Icelanders where they are – safely out of trouble in Brazil.
