So far this year, 3,737 new cars have been registered in Iceland, compared with 15,343 after the same number of days last year. That represents a 75.68 percent drop in new car sales between years, mbl.is reports.
In addition to new car sales, there have been 47,356 changes of car ownership so far this year, compared with 69,809 to this point last year. That is a 32 percent reduction on last year, according to figures released by Umferdarstofa, the Icelandic national Road Traffic Directorate.

Is Iceland offering a scrappage deal similar to that offered in the US and much of EU? In the UK for example, the government gives customers £2000 towards the cost of a new car if they scrap their old car.
Over consumption —> Overblown prices —> Over consumption. And the regulator is in the form of money here.
Finally a rare good news at icenews :-)
People have started to think rather than just “buy” new toy.
PS. Yes Jim, guys here are trying all kinds of trick to get you waste your money on this crap-on-wheels.

There has been a scrappage scheme in place for years.
Not conditional on buying a new car.
Use to be US$200, now about US$115 :)
It would not be the most sensible thing to introduce irresponsible incentives to encourage a drain of foreign reserves to help GM and VW, would it?
Not unless the World Bank order it to be done

Why would it? its a manufacturers support scheme and to blow money into the over inflated economy.
As Iceland doesn’t have a manufacturing industry to support and no taxpayers money to burn/export its a ridiculous concept to even consider.
Mistimed and misinformed,
par for the course from Peter-london.
>Mistimed and misinformed,
How so?
Yes Knowless, what are you talking about?
Export of the unsold luxury cars far better idea :

But I guess our Red-Green government friend thought making such practical thing possible and encouraged to be beneath them.
