The Saami parliament (Samediggi) governing the indigenous Saami people in Norway, decided not to approve the new mining law which Norwegian legislators passed earlier this year, according to the Saami news source, The Barents Observer. Egil Olli, President of the Saami parliament, stated that the assembly strongly opposes any application for mineral exploration in the Finnmark region.
The Saami Parliament demands that any resources and mineral exploration should benefit mainly the local Saami communities and population, which brings up the controversial ongoing debates regarding indigenous land rights in the region. Egil Olli continues to state that any mining projects will be rejected by the Saami Parliament in the Finnmark area.
The saami people are against it because they want more money from the government. That is what this is all about – money. But, do not pay them, remove the saami parliament, and let the saami people be like other norwegians.
And they have too many reindeer too. >They starv in the winter because there isn`t any food left…
