Jokulsarlon, Iceland’s famous ice lagoon is nearly full. The lagoon is fed by ice breaking off the Vatnajokull Glacier which is the biggest in Europe.
One of Vatnajokull’s glacial tongues which directly feeds the lagoon, Breidamerkurjokull, has been in fast retreat recently and Jokulsarlon is now very nearly full up as a result of the ice breaking away, RUV.is reports.
It was Omar Ragnarsson, enthusiastic amateur pilot, environmental campaigner, national celebrity and former RUV journalist who brought the news to light. He says he noticed a massive difference in the appearance of the ice lagoon from above when flying over several days ago.

Several days ago?
I noticed it last summer. And I assume I was not alone. And I’m wondering if the last summer temperature record of +28 C will stand this summer. Everything is changing all the time.
How can it fill up when it’s open to the sea? Any excess water would just flow away, wouldn’t it?
The article seems not conclusive. What may be the possible consequences of the lagoon filling up ? That would be more interesting to read.
according to the last number from HÍ Breiðamerkjökull is not retreating as much as before… it is even increasing..the same with some other glacier in Iceland such as drangajökull…The question is why ?
Mariane: They mean that it’s filling up with ice. And yes, any excess water just flows away, but the chunks of ice stay there until they melt.
It is filled with ICEBERGS not water.
