Thanks Axel. Turns out the machine translation was worse than I thought :) .

I've read about the Breki Karlsson case on Iceland Review, but they just mention it very briefly.
http://icelandreview.com/icelandreview/daily_news/?cat_id=16539&ew_0_a_id=335658

Best of luck to him, and the special prosecutor if he goes for them as well.

>some how got lost in a drawer

That would be very interesting Axel. Do you have a link to a news item (or even blog) on that missing case? Icelandic will do, although the machine translation only gets one word in three :) .

One of the interesting things that Joly said this time around is that, even though she's not expecting to recover loads of money, the investigation will more than fund itself. So there really is no (financial) reason for the government to grant the full budget/authorise staffing levels etc.

Joly wants the chief prosecutor Valtýr removed from office because the CEO of Exista is his son,
http://www.exista.is/index.aspx?GroupId=196&tabid=202
Exista is a very shady company to say the least, it owned some 30% of KB and, characters like Czhenguiz owned a large slice of Exista, a suspected fraud case regarding KB was sent to Valtýrs office and was supposed to go on to the special prosecutor's office some how got lost in a drawer and wasnt found until 3 months later when people started looking for it,
all other cases went trough normally, i think.

Thanks for the laugh Fisy! Transparency International is a joke, but it's good to see them refusing to change their criteria.

Regarding Eva, the full interview, in three parts (the earlier link was only the first third of the interview):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEfivv7mqys
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01KtY0Iwn0A
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAB8bEOpcMo&NR=1

She's actually remarkable apolitical in it. The crux of her argument is that she was brought in partly as a figurehead to reassure the people that any crimes will be correctly investigated.

Therefore, she's well within her rights to threaten to pull out if she feels that, for whatever reason, the government is not doing anything like enough. After all, why should she allow her reputation to be used to help cover up, whether intentional or not?

“To loose people like Eva Joly because of this “mafia style” friend protection, political involvement and general incompetence would put Iceland to the top of the list of most corrupted states in the world."

That article writer really should drink less of the strong cafe so they can stop spewing out this hyperbole nonsense and get out into the world outside Reykjavík area a couple of times to see what the rest of world is actually like.

Icelandic people would need to do a lot more to get themselves up the list of most perceived corrupt country. A whole lot more. They would have to learn from and do more like Spain or Portugal and Greece and Italy.

I think our general contempt for politicians ensures that will never happen. But if we join the EU we can help the process of politicians here getting more corrupt like nearly every where else with they fat expense accounts.

And why is it that Norway went up the list of corruption more than Iceland during 2008 ' Corruption Perceptions Index' ?

( Yes I know there is a lag, but Norway? Why? Please somone in Norway explain that one. It is a mystery to me. )

http://www.transparency.org/news_room/in_focus/2008/cpi2008/cpi_2008_table

Way that image problem Iceland have in finance is fixed is to pay its debts.

And investigate cases of criminal behvior fairly and to the letter of the law. And after trial punish the guilty with jail term as mandated by the laws or other punishment -- such as disqualifiation from being a director, etc.

Eva Joly has her experience but it is actually how the cases are investigated that matters most. I doubt she herself would disagree with that. She is not doing the investigating her self.

In that her recommending that there be 30 or so investigaters and perhaps three specific ones leading teams under Ólafur Þór ( one for each bank ) is very reasonable.

But expressing her opinion about political matters is unwise. As it make her look partisan. Everyone have opinion about many things. They know what to keep to themself.

As an elected politician I hope she will now bring her skills and knowledge to the EU corruption -- maybe she will ally with fellow fresh new Euro MP Marta Andreasen?

Or maybe not.

"There has got to be a reason for this sluggish actions of the government and the obvious lack of will to investigate the matter fully. What is needed is a total change of the whole system."

It is because Red-Green government is interested in they pet projects and fumbling around about this EU membership that Icelanders do not want after that ridicilous early and expensive election.

And they did make sure from February that the competitent people did not have an interest in going to the FME.

And they interest instead was getting Davið out of the Central Bank. Perhaps if they had not got Davið out this investigations would have come about more quickly?

Becuase a lot of these ones one the books now certainly do appear to come from infrmation that Davið did pass on.

"Beside this, one thing that strikes me is why there have not been any arrests? Why has it taken eight months to start raiding houses, obtaining computers and other evidence, and why people who are formally under investigation like Hannes Smárason have not been detained”.

Because investigation do take time.

You know the ones where there is not people getting rounded up in the night -- or taken off the street to fill some quota of arrests.
